I found a clone works and is activated.
But I want to clean install 11 on an 80gb drive instead of a 500gb which cant clone that small. And keep the 500gb drive for potentially other use.

I made a USB install using windows media creation tool.

The current workaround is described in
How to upgrade from Win11 21h2 to Win 11 22h2 - A guide - Luiz - ElevenForum
which says that you should create a blank appraiserres.dll file [instead of deleting it as we did for v21H2].

I tried simply booting the win10 on the laptop and installing from there using mount the 11 iso, run setupprep /product server method, spent a lot of time setting up 11, but it failed on a restart to boot itself and shut down. Then when I restarted (push button), windows reverted to 10 pro.

I was able to create a clone of 11 from another desktop (AMD) and put the drive into the Dell 630 (intel), and it boots 11 pro perfect and works ok, after it spent some time reconfiguring itself.

And since was already activated from 10 to my MS online account, it was activated. So I know the old laptop runs 11.

The install I want is to boot from usb, wipe the 80gb drive and clean install 11, so maybe the Rufus idea can work.

Otherwise, I thought there was something about a blank appraiserres.dll file method booting from usb and no prior windows install on the drive.

I had the large 6.4 gb iso already downloaded from last week, so used that for RUFUS method.
Since the dell 630 is not uefi, I set to MBR from GPT
Rufus gives you options for old PC before it creates the drive after you click start

Well dummy me just wiped out my recovery USB for my Dell 7530 I had made last week. Forgot to swap out the 256GB usb drive for the 8GB usb drive...
I can always make another but honestly that took so long like an hour to make even with usb 3. I think you better off using the setupprep /product server method to refresh a windows install and keep files and programs intact than using a recovery usb.

Rufus did the job, it is working on 11 on this old DELL D630

One thing did give me grief, trying to sign into my MS account. I tried 10 times to sign in, it would go to authenticator and pass, then it says we need your password one more time... I thought they wanted my ms account password, no, no. They wanted my local user account password.
Well, I did not have one, I saw nothing about that when win 11 first came up. Windows responds by saying oops, we had an error on our side.

I restarted PC, then windows told me I had to change my local account password. So I typed in a new password, logged in.
Went back to setting up my MS login account on the PC, and that time for the final password request used my local account password and it finally worked.

MS wording this by saying we need your password one more time is not clear enough. Should word it different, like now we need your local account password. The whole process let me try without even setting a local account password, or even a local account setup. There was a local account already made for me with username 'sdown'

Most of the recommendations are that you don't sign in with an MS account
- no license key
- no MS account
- no internet connection
until the basic full installation is completed and up and running

You asked about clean installs.
What you did was not a clean install but a Repair install [aka In-place upgrade].

I know I did and it failed, Which Is why I was looking how to do a clean install on unsupported hardware.

RUFUS 4.4 DOES NOT crack Windows 24H2. Microsoft changed its requirements check and files for booting up the USB bypassing all of the RUFUS "Hacks" such as TPM 2.0 and Minimum RAM Requirements. My system works fine without the hack. I was doing it for a friend with an older PC. However, Windows 11 23H2 works fine with RUFUS. Please take note of this.

I think your talking about the POPCNT SSE4.2 cpu requirement, As long as the cpu has that, Rufus will work on old unsupported hardware with 24H2 like for cpu that are below 8th gen for Intel

example, I have a phenom ii x4 955 that has POPCNT but cant install 23H2, but with Rufus it can install, and will be able to be installing 24H2 with Rufus

you can also clone an installed win 11 OS and just put it in unsupported hardware and it will boot up 23H2, and be activated too as long as hardware was already priorly activated with an earlier version of 10 or 11.

I figure 24H2 will be the same thing except for if the cpu does not have the POPCNT

In this video, i will upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 on unsupported computer hardware. Although Windows 11 has a higher system requirement, you may still be able to perform an upgrade on an unsupported computer. The Windows setup has an “appraiser” service that checks to see if your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements for that version. It’s possible to replace the appraiserres.dll file in the Windows 11 setup with one from an older build of Windows 10. In order to replace the Windows 11 DLL with one from Windows 10, you’ll actually need the setup files for Windows 10.

I've not found cloning to a smaller drive works, always clone to same size or larger. I only use offline/hardware cloning in a dual-drive dock.

I have installed two operating systems of Windows 11 insider preview v24 H2 build 26063 on two partitions of 1TB HDD(MBR).
And Windows 11 insider preview v24 H2 build 26063 on 128 Gb SSD(GPT) format.
All three Windows 11 are running very well on i3 processor in my pc with 4GB RAM.

I have 2 Notebooks, Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 and HP Envy 17 TS, both from 2014 and did the Upgrade using the USB Thumb drive created by the MCT process. They were booted into Win10 and I changed the mentioned file in the Sources folder on the USB drive then ran the setup.exe file on the USB drive. They have made it through the last 2 Patch Tuesday updates without issue.
