Cannot change from beta to Release preview to get to 24H2

It seems I need to do a clean install of 11. How can I do this and retain all my settings and apps?

I upgraded to 24H2 from a 22631 build (not beta) by downloading the ISO from uupdump.net. Are you able to do that?

I wasn't in an insider program.

To upgrade from one version to another the new version must be equal or greater. If you are currently on an Insider's Preview version it should have greater build number than the standard release 23H2, so you cannot. You have to wait until October for the standard release of 24H2 and download the ISO to upgrade (I think it won't be offered in Windows Upgrade).

From what I read in various threads 24H2 introduces some more restrictions, such as SSE4.2 and PopCnt requirement. Also it cannot boot in Legacy Mode, only in UEFI mode, unless you replace the bootloader with that from 23H2. So take a full disk backup and be extra careful before you clean install it or upgrade.

For clean installation in Legacy BIOS mode you can create a hybrid 23H2/24H2 USB flash drive to bypass the UEFI requirement. This is a USB created using the 23H2 ISO but with the file sources\install.wim (or install.esd) replaced with the respective file in the 24H2 ISO. After installation it won't boot in Legacy Mode. You boot again from the USB and using Command Prompt you install the 23H2 bootloader (replacing the 24H2 one) which supports Legacy BIOS mode. I don't remember exact details, see relevant threads.

To upgrade from a Legacy BIOS 23H2 installation to 24H2, you can do the same hack (disconnect from the internet and replace the appraiserres.dll file), but then you must boot from the hybrid USB to install the 23H2 bootloader as explained above. Keep the hybrid USB flash drive handy, as any update could replace the bootloader and render the system unbootable. In that case you must again install the 23H2 bootloader.
