Solved Cannot disable fast startup

Windows 10 S Mode (with S disabled)
Turn on fast startup is enabled on my W11 Laptop. No matter how many times I click it the check mark remains. I have nothing against it. But I would like to turn it off now and then to purge the disk space used. Plus I hate it when they try to force settings on me. :cool:

    I purchased this for $109 because it is the only Laptop I have seen with 1920x1080 resolution for the money. OK for streaming, email, etc..

In Control Panel it is important to remember to click the 'Save changes' button when done, else it won't remember your changes.

Thanks for the reply but that is not it. The check mark never goes away even as I click it. I am wondering if some power profile locks it or whatnot. Maybe I will just take a disk used reading and then restart to see if that discards the files.

Nope. Never heard of it. But I did take a reading then restart. After restart I had about 105 MB more space than just before I restarted. Mayne that is the compressed file discarded?

Edit: OK the dark theme messed me up. Thanks for the fix. (y)

I got it. The only reason I am messing with it is I restarted a few times trying to get my WiFi up to speed and I noticed I gained a couple GB of free space. I was mainly just curious where it came from. Trying it with the option off and on only seems to make 10 or 20 MB difference. Something else on my system I did not need must have been discarded during all those restarts. No big deal. :cool:

I got it. The only reason I am messing with it is I restarted a few times trying to get my WiFi up to speed and I noticed I gained a couple GB of free space. I was mainly just curious where it came from. Trying it with the option off and on only seems to make 10 or 20 MB difference. Something else on my system I did not need must have been discarded during all those restarts. No big deal. :cool:

It sounds like you may have turned hibernation off from the command prompt, Brink's tutorial, Option Two. If so, that would have deleted hiberfil.sys which on my system is about 3GB.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

Thanks for the replies. I think I see what happened. Usually I open the lid to initiate startup. But sometimes I would have everything set up at home and select shutdown from the start menu, unplug the charger and shut off any battery-powered devices if I was not going to use the laptop for some time. Then I would startup using the keyboard button. I thought stuff was accumulating on the drive but the way I was starting up must have provoked the machine to save state on shutdown. Once it shed the excess the number of free GB looked familiar. I may be guessing wrongly but I'll abandon this theory if something solid contradicts it. But I definitely noticed the laptop getting to the lock screen much more quickly when I pressed the button. :cool:
