Cannot seem to uninstall or disable the Snipping Tool - Windows 11 latest build

Hello smart people!

I have an issue where I cannot for the life of me disable the Snipping Tool. I want to be able to use Snagit 2023 with the PrtScrn button but no matter WHAT the snipping tool comes up.

I am on the latest build of Windows 11 Pro (22621.1413).

I have done all of the Googled things to disable it.

Turn off "Use the print screen" to open screen snipping under Settings -> Accessibility ->Keyboard
Add 32-bit Dword called "PrintScreenKeyForSnippingEnabled" to registry under "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard"
"Do not Allow Snipping Tool To Run" set to Enabled using Group Policy (GPEDIT.MSC) and going to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Tablet PC -> Accessories
Uninstall Snipping Tool

(Just searched for Snipping Tool, and right-clicked and clicked Uninstall. It no longer shows up as a Windows Feature

And I rebooted the computer after each step above just for good measure.

I use Sangit 2023 and never had the issue you describe. My best guess is that somehow Snagit didn't register properly when it was installed. Try reinstalling Snagit 2023 and look for any setting that relates to Snagit being the default application or something to that effect. It's been a long time ago, but I remember a setting to have Snagit be the default app for the the Print Screen key.

You can also try the following...

Select Start > TechSmith > Snagit to open the Capture Window. Confirm Print Screen is set as the Global Capture hotkey under the red Capture button. To change the hotkey to Print Screen, click in that area and press the Print Screen key.

I'll try to reinstall Snagit. When I hit PrtScrn in the hotkey area of the Capture window it says "Lwin" for some reason.. it's registering as the Left Windows Key. And still even if I get Snagit to register as PrtScrn it's still bizarre that Uninstall, Gpedit, Registry key and turning off Print Screen for the Snipping Tool all don't work.

In SnagIt, open Preferences, and go to the Hotkeys tab. Select the option called "Allow Snagit to override other hotkey assignments".

I reinstalled Snagit and it came up with "Print Screen" as the hotkey under the capture button. I did go in and say override other key assignments and the #$@#% snipping tools till comes up.

Ok, I did find out something. The laptop I am using is a Lenovo Ideapad and the "PrtSc" (that's how they spell it) key also has a symbol of scissors and a dotted line circle on it.

So ... in order to use the PrtSc part if it I have to hit FN + PrtSc ... otherwise hitting PrcSc without FN does the scissors with dashed circle option.

Still completely confused why the Snipping Tool would still be running after uninstalling it, disabling it in the registry, and disabling it in Group Policy is set.. but at least now I can use Snagit if I do FN + PrtSc.

You did not have to uninstall it. There is a setting to using the print screen key to open snipping tool. You may have to reinstall snipping tool to see this setting.

Having the exact same issue, did you ever find a resolution for this?
It's absolutely infuriating. The OS button to disable snipping tool does nothing, on or off same effect.
GPO did nothing, reg dword did nothing. Uninstall the entire package with powershell and reboot -- nothing.
It won't take a screen shot, but the snipping tool bar pops up and owns the Print Screen key at all times no matter what.

I also see the print screen button output LWIN
no 3rd party screencap tool can override it.

It almost feels like this is built into the OS at some level in such a generic way that it cannot be worked around.

So just installed powertoys for win11.
and remapped WIN(Left) to Print Screen, and sure enough it opens my 3rd party app (greenshot).
but so does the left windows key now -- so the OS is hijacking the keyboard print screen button and sending it to snipping tool installed or not, and temp mapping it to the windows start button to prevent anything else from using it while the snipping tool is active (which appears to be always regardless of it not being installed).

Right - it does what I told it to do in that test.
point being, that is what was required to override the print screen os mapping.
(The default win 11 behavior)- the print screen button when pressed (and viewed in a key capture/mapping app) shows as WINL instead of Print Screen.
So print screen button does not function with the classic print screen input, the OS is capturing and redirecting it temporarily using WINL -- which subverts any attempts to remap that key, even when the snipping tool app is uninstalled the OS is redirecting.

After editing the mapping - windows has now redirected it from WINL to Left Shift.
so it appears each attempt to remap the print screen key, the OS moves it to another mapping to reclaim it in the interim.

Hi all! Just had the same issue and it was really annoying. I uninstalled Snipping Tool but when pressing the PrtSc button it was showing up instead of Greenshot. What solved it for me was that I opened Settings/Accessibility Keyboard Settings and there it was - you have to scroll down a bit but you can switch off Snipping Tool for the print screen button. I did one restart and I have my Greenshot back!

This was already covered in previous steps in this thread - it's not the solution.

It's disabled, but when I press Print Screen key, the snipping tool bar still takes over, it just doesn't do anything now.

@newguy - so did you find a solution? I've tried both uninstalling and updating the Keyboard accessibility settings but haven't gone into the registry.... This is really quite annoying. My first major gripe with Win 11. For now I've just remapped Greenshot (region) to another random combo... ctrl + shift + = or something like that lol

Have you tried uninstalling the snipping tool via Winget?

Open terminal (admin) and type winget list snipping
Make a note of the version then type winget uninstall --name Snipping Tool --version 11.2309.16.0 copying the version in the result. Reboot for good measure.

I was facing this same exact issue and it was driving me nuts!! I had tried all the things already in this thread that dlhtox described and then when I came across

It had me thinking. I noticed this too when I tried reassigning the shortcut key. When I went to remap it with powertools it said that I couldn't remap this key. Then it suddenly hit me, I was using a Logitech MX Keys keyboard. To my surprise, Logitech has the snipping tool mapped to the print screen button. I went into Logi Options+ and reassigned the button to "screen capture" and viola, it fixed it and snagit is back to working like normal.

I know this is an old post, but I figured I would post this for future in case someone came across the same issue.

This was my problem as well! - my Logitech MX Keys S keyboard mapping the print screen button(s) to Screen Snip rather than to Print Screen. Once I disable that mapping, the Snipping Tool no longers appears and I can use my own third party software of choice (FastStone Capture). So, I probably didn't need to uninstall the Snipping Tool packages in Powershell (twice), and disable the MS Snipping Tool in the Local Group Policy Editor, and disable it in the registry, and disable it in the Window Settings, and reboot (twice), and........
