Solved Can't connect to any other computers on my Network.......

I have shared drives on all my computers on my Network, set up file sharing in Network and Internet settings and have everything set to where it should not ask for a Sharing password but no matter what it asks for sharing username and password everytime I try to connect. The box always pops up. I have had this behaviour for some time now. I had not tried sharing on Windows 11 until now, just cannot get it to work. Any help would be appreciated.

many things -- Windows Networking fixes are often beyond the skills of Gandalf the Wizard to fix - but here goes:

but usually check the easy things first :

1) Ensure Allow remote connections to this computer is enabled
2) Check if other computers are using SMB1 . If they are enable SMB1 on windows
3) Have at least 1 disk as "shared"
4) Enure computer name is OK and workgroup name consistent over your network
5) ensure network visibility is enabled.

Other than that - just switch off any non windows device and re-boot the lot including the router --it's just possible for example a Mobile phone or another device has "grabbed an IP address" that your W11 computer wants.

DO NOT enable SMB1 unless you know exactly what you are doing and you have devices that are ancient or simply only support this protocol.

It is very insecure and is also obsolete.

Also in addition to @RFS post, if your connections are through WiFi, make sure your connections are marked as Private instead of the default Public, or nothing will work properly. Same ofc applies for LAN (wired connection) too.

Make sure your network connection is marked “Private” not “Public”. Also I would try restarting service “Fdrespub”.

Agree -- but was just answering the OP -- there's still plenty of older equipement that still needs SMB1 . There are also ways to "Isolate" the SMB1 computers via a proxy server -- but presumably if people know how to set those up they will be fairly computer literate and shouldn't have too many problems with SMB1.

In any case on domestic computers a lot of security is overblown. These days far more danger is caused by users themselves falling victims to relatively simple scams or giving out too much info freely via Social media etc.

I doubt whether your sophisticated Chinese or N.Korean hacker is going to spend too much time trying to wheedle people like me out of 25 EUR from a bank account. !!!! Much bigger things around today for those types of individuals.

Then there is still one more thing you may have to do.

You need to launch Windows Credentials Manager and add the required credentials required for each machine you are trying to connect to.

This way you don't have to type the info each time you connect.

I think the OP was complaining about that the W11 computer couldn't see the rest of his network. If say a W7 machine is still there then SMB1 is still needed.

I agree about obsolescence but there's still plenty of gear that runs for years -- we still have some Road building / huge digging machines and other equipment in Iceland that is running on XP -- this type of gear might last for another 50 years and Iceland is not exactly backward in matters of I.T -- I'm sure a lot of countries are going through all sorts of similar "Economic revaluation" policies -- and chucking away good gear that still works benefits neither the taxpayer or country as a whole - and I doubt if a N.Korean hacker is going to attack a big drilling machine in the middle of Dettifoss for example.

100% agree -- but that's not the whole issue sometimes. -- Don't get me wrong -- I WANT computers to be as safe as possible but just because something is theoretically possible doesn't mean users have enabled it. !!!

Not having a go at you - and we all want systems to be safe - but sometimes trying to get this stuff to work is beyond the typical remit of a "bog standard user" who basically just want to boot up their system and go with it.

Of course -- but how many typical I.T guys have responsibility of replacing / re-ordering big Engineereing machines costing 100's of thousands of EUR when the current ones are still working.

Not sure how elections work in Finland but I'd hate to be on the doorsteps of their electorate as a candidate explaining to voters why "We have to chuck many millions of EUR down the drain" to replace perfectly functioning equipment at the present difficult time for most western economies.

I'm betting that I know exactly what the issue is. First, let's review the things others have mentioned and which you have already mentioned as having in place:

1) The properties of your network should be "Private network".
2) Both Network discovery and File and printer sharing should be enabled.
3) Since you don't want to be prompted for a user name and password, you would have set the share permissions to allow "everyone" access.

This is the item I'm betting you are missing:

4) In File Explorer, navigate to the location of the share. Right-click that folder and select "Properties". If sharing the root of a drive, right-click the actual drive and select properties. Select the Security tab. To the right of the text that says "To change permissions, click Edit", click on that Edit button. On the resulting window, if "Everyone" is not listed under "Group or user names", then click on "Add", type in "Everyone", click "OK", select the permissions that these users should have (for example, "Full control"), click "OK", and "OK" again.

Now you should be able to access the share without being prompted for credentials. from the network.

In my post above, I forgot to list one other item that should already be in place: In Network and Sharing Center, Advanced sharing settings, under the All networks section, set Password protected sharing to "Turn off password protected sharing".
