Accounts Change Display Name of Account in Windows 11

Accounts_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to change the full name of a local account or Microsoft account used as the display name in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Having different accounts on a shared PC lets multiple people use the same device, all while giving everyone their own sign-in info, plus access to their own files, browser favorites, and desktop settings.

You can add a local user account (an offline account) or Microsoft account for a user to sign in to the PC with.

The user name of an account is used to identify the account in Windows.

The full name of an account is the display name used in Windows. The account's display name will show on locations like the Sign-in screen, Start Menu, and Settings.

When you create a Microsoft account, you specify a changeable full name as part of the process that is used as the display name.

If a local account doesn't have a full name specified, then its user name is used as the display name instead by default.

You must be signed in as an administrator to change the display name of an account.

Hello! I created a local account (using oobe\bypassnro) when switching from Windows 10 by clean installing Windows 11 24H2 from a USB .
I did this to keep a custom user folder name (my nickname) and not just the first 5 letters of the email in my MS account.

I then converted this local account to a Microsoft account. But now my full name or first name is displayed everywhere (Login Screen, Start Menu, User's Folder Desktop shortcut, etc.) and I don't like that, I prefer my nickname.

I followed the first method mentioned above (using netplwiz) to change that, but it's not working - I first tried deleting the Full Name entirely (leaving it blank, hoping it would assume the value from the User name field), but that didn't work - it's not asking for a sign-out and reverts to my full name after relaunching netplwiz or signing out/restarting. I then typed in my username in the Full name field (so both User name and Full name are identical one-word values). That displayed a "sign-out required" prompt and worked briefly - the new value is displayed on the login screen, but is reverted to my full name immediately after entering my PIN and pressing "Enter" - it changes to my full name right there on the login screen. Using Local Users and Groups only works to change the value temporarily in netplwiz, but after restarting the full name is right there on the login screen, not even the edited value like when using netplwiz. Turning off my internet connection doesn't work, either - seems like it's not "pulling" the full name from a server.

The only thing that is working is changing my full name online at account.microsoft.com/profile/
However, it requires both a first and last name there, so it's not an option (and it also messes with Office, where I indeed want my full name to be used)

I guess there is no other solution besides using a local account permanently?

Hello @aqdrk, and welcome. :alien:

It appears the "full name" of a Microsoft account in Windows now automatically gets synced back to whatever you have its name set as online like in option one below.
