Alt+Tab_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disabling showing tabs from apps when snapping or pressing ALT+TAB for your account, specific users, or all users in Windows 11.

You can press the Alt + Tab or Ctrl + Alt + Tab keys to switch between open windows in Windows 11.

You can change how many recent tabs from apps show when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22563, there is now support for Microsoft Edge tabs in snap assist and Alt+Tab.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1928, All tabs has been replaced by 20 most recent tabs to show tabs in Alt+Tab and Snap Assist.

This is a fascinating exchange between you guys @Brink & @dacrone. Both @dacrone & I have it working just fine. I have switched the AltTabSettings value back & forth between 0 & 1 several times & I get either the standard W11 task switcher or the small-icon task switcher as the default correctly each way, although as I noted, closing File Explorer is not enough. I have to at least sign out to make the registry change come into effect.

But I'm not getting any advance releases. I'm not a canary or any other sort of animal. I've got just the consumer version of W11 Pro. Maybe that's a factor. I assume Brink is on the most bleeding part of the cutting edge, right? What are you running Dacrone?

But now Dacrone, you have pulled another rabbit out of the hat. It looks like, do correct me if I'm wrong, I could make the small-icon task switcher both wider & longer by changing CoolSwitchColumns & CoolSwitchRows respectively, keeping AltTabSettings at 1. Is that something you have experience with? Or should I just pioneer it? Do those column & row keys also affect the standard W11 task switcher if that's your default? Or do those keys affect only the small-icon task switcher?

You'll notice I'm being pedantic about calling it the small-icon task switcher. Clearly, it's something that is delivered with W11. I haven't added any special packages to make that work. It's just an undocumented (at least to me) feature of the standard W11. I want to avoid any reference to W7 or legacy because this is something that is obviously just in W11.

How do you know all of this? Do you have access to the code? Do you have some developer-only documentation? Friends on the inside? Special powers of clairvoyance & telepathy? Have you performed a Vulcan mind-meld with Windows?

since you cant make the classic alt tab stay via ctrl key, you can use this little app that runs in the system tray...

you'll have to customize the settings to make it look how you desire.

...
But you are mistaken about the size of the small-icon task switcher. The more tasks you have open, the more rows of icons it shows. It has a size that dynamically changes to accommodate however many tasks you have active. For me, I'd rather have the smaller icons so I can see the full picture of what's running in one display. To each his own.
...
That's not my observation. I can't do a 'screen shot' of an alt-tab, or ctrl-alt-tab action, so I took a good-old-fashioned photo. It's blurry because I was trying to take the pic with one hand while doing the alt-alt-tab. As you can see, though, the alt-alt-tab window is showing a window with 3 rows of 7 tasks, so a total of 21 tasks in total:
Alt-Alt-Tab.jpg

I can guarantee you that I have a LOT more than 21 tasks active! If I press alt-alt-tab, tab, tab, tab ... etc - the selection box steps through the list, and once it reaches the 21st, and moves to the 22nd, it scrolls up the window (I have about 70 tasks active).

@Steerpike I believe if you just keep tabbing, it will continue down to the row 4 that isn't showing in your image. In addition, the guys talk about 2 registry keys that control the width & height of the small-icon task switcher. Its default is, as you have proven, 7 wide by 3 high. But I've changed it to 20 wide by 6 high. The limits are in a post upthread. I'm not trying to convince you to try it. I'm just trying to be complete.

@dacrone I'll look into that thingy. Thanks for the link.

@Brink I have a favor to ask. When you inject stuff into a post, please leave a bread crumb or footprint that you did it. For a while there I was questioning my sanity. Like, I don't remember posting that. You don't want to be messing with my sanity, which is tenuous at the best of times. So in the interests of my optimal mental health, please identify your interventions. I'm not complaining about you doing that. It's fine with me. Just mark it as your doing & not mine.

So I got Alt Tab Thingy & I was playing around with it a bit. Interesting interface. I was trying to to some things with it & something didn't work. So I tried to go to their home page: www.nymithiumtechnologies.com, & to their forum, which is on the same site. My ISP's domain name server says there's no such web site. This is just a bit concerning. It's freeware so I suppose no harm no foul. But this does make me quite suspicious. I may give it a few days to see if the site reappears. If it does not, I think I will abandon this one. I don't think it gives me enough over the small-icon task switcher I'm using now to make me jump at the chance to use it.

I managed to make it work by stumbling around. I decided to kill it in the Task Manager, then restart it. The change in the settings that appeared to not be taking then took. So now I can use either the task switcher built into the system or this add-on, at will. I'll live with it for a bit & see how I like it.

what happens if you try the older winaero tweaker 1.4? i tested on a win 11 box and it allows me to enable the old alt tab, so i know it works. why it was removed from the newer releases, i dont know. its under the appearance category if you want to try it
I prefer the newer Alt+Tab with thumbnails anyways.

Here's something I discovered because I know how to accidentally fatfinger everything it is possible to fatfinger. With the small-icon task switcher set as my system default, I accidentally hit Win+Tab. This displays the Ctrl+Alt+Tab task switcher of the original large-icon task switcher, plus the icons of the desktop switcher. So I now have access to both built-in task switchers plus Alt Tab Thingy. I'm fairly drowning in choices. Well, everybody has access to both built-in task switchers regardless of which one is your default. It's just that I've just discovered how to get the large-icon task switcher when the small-icon task switcher is my default, which I don't think I knew how to do before my fat fingers taught me how to do it. Haven't all the greatest discoveries in history been discovered by accident? I wouldn't call this a great historic discovery, but I have to say most of what I know about Windows & PCs in general I've learned by making mistakes like this one.

windows tab always displays your open windows/apps and the virtual desktops at the bottom. this was added in win 10 i believe. different/extended functionality than alt tab due to virtual desktops

As a W11 noob, I hadn't yet learned that key sequence. No, I'm not one of those who says, I don't need no steenkin manual. It's just that I haven't read it yet. I have discovered a tutorial on here (written by I wonder who) that has an absolutely massive list of keyboard shortcuts. It's more than anybody could possibly absorb quickly, if ever. I have it bookmarked in my Firefox bookmarks. Win+Tab is in there. Its official title is, apparently, Task view. OK. I can't mention a tutorial without giving its link:

Yeah it’s ok. I never use virtual desktops as I have 4 displays running at all times.. no need really. What does come in handy is pinning an alt tab script to the taskbar so I can navigate around stuff much faster
