Hi folks. How do I change my wireless password for a specific wireless network? Easily!

Every semester I have to change my password. Every semester I have trouble reconnecting to the wireless network and the tech support here sends me through a long path that changes every semester and, in any event, that I can't remember. I just want an easy way to change the password for the wireless network. But Win11 doesn't seem to have a way to do that. Do you?

Thanks.

Here is an idea: Perhaps you could record the steps into a macro file on Windows and then play it when you need to change your Windows client Wi-Fi password. Here are the steps to change the client wi-fi password-->
then perhaps one can record each of the process steps into a macro file for later use--> How to Automate Tasks in Windows 11 Using Macros

Hope this helps.

I'll have to look into that automated idea. First I have tons of other questions about Win11. But I think the problem in this case is the error I receive when I try to edit the Advanced Wifi Properties. Should I maybe start a different thread about that?

When I try step 5, click on Edit next to "Advanced Wi-Fi Properties" I get the following error. Maybe that's because of the unusual setup they have here. How do I fix that?

That usually means you'll need to delete (forget) the profile, and create a new profile by connecting to the Wi-Fi network again with the new password.

Yeah, that's usually the problem with this institution. They have their own app which configures the connection, but never works consistently and rarely works right. Thanks.

You need a short PowerShell or batch script to:
1. Export the current Wi-Fi profile, and replace the current encrypted string with a new plaintext password.
2. Replace the existing profile using the temp file.
3. Delete the files, since the plaintext password is a security risk and it's no longer needed.

This script presumes you have an existing Wi-Fi profile you want the password changed on.

Change_WiFi_Password.ps1
Code:
$Profile = "GARLIN 5G"
$NewPassword = "password1234"

# Character substitution for special chars
$key = $NewPassword -replace """", """ -replace "&", "&" -replace "'", "&pos;" -replace "<", "<" -replace ">", ">"

Set-Location $PSScriptRoot
netsh wlan export profile $Profile key=clear folder=.
(Get-Content "Wireless Network Connection-${Profile}.xml") -replace '<protected>(.*)</protected>','<protected>false</protected>' -replace '<keyMaterial>(.*)</keyMaterial>',"<keyMaterial>$key</keyMaterial>" | Set-Content "${Profile}.xml" -Encoding Ascii -Force

netsh wlan add profile filename=`""${Profile}.xml"`" user=all

Remove-Item -Force "Wireless Network Connection-${Profile}.xml", "${Profile}.xml"

PS. If your school has some weird provisioning setup, this might not work...
