I'm not the only one who was blocked - full disclosure in Firefox. Who reported us? I filed a report with Google on the incident.
Probably some Linux forum reported bull$hit to block Elevenforum. Linux sucks, get over with it.

Google Safe Browsing reported the forum as unsafe! Ridiculous, as I had to whitelist it.
Not the forum, only this ExplorerPatcher thread.

I saw that too when I posted above you and necromanced the thread (that was declared dead by elevenforum — apparently that's them rules here if there is no response to a thread within one month).

Anyways I ignored Google SafeBrowse's warning cuz I thought it was a mistake (as I didn't enter this thread from google search or app but from another parts of the Elevenforum (that Google didn't throw notice for).

Jeez - I forgot XP was 21st century !
I STILL use XP with a studio application for cutting Vinyl records. I make bespoke Vinyls for some people -- the trick was in being able to source the blank vinyls -- now easily available from Taiwan etc.

To update the (perfectly good) running hardware and software would cost over € 20,000 these days plus a whopping load of "proprietary License fees and software subscriptions for commercial recording etc etc".

Not worth it. The XP runs perfectly as a VM. I extract the music on Linux / W11 machines, send to XP as old nero .nrg files which mount as conventional CD's and then create the appropriate music disks. I also have a professional minidisc recorder (the pro model doesn't have all the DRM nonsense in it) and can make minidiscs for many people who still use them !!!.

As for menus - I agree the standard start thing is fine-- but for complex applications like photoshop it's nice to have some sort of cascading menu system whether from within the application itself or from a start menu because one is unlikely ever to be able to learn all the various options these types of programs offer.

Not running many programs from W11 I'm quite content to have pretty well all of them iconized on the desktop.

Cheers
jimbo

I remember my portable Sharp Mini Disc recorder. There was a workaround (involving removing the battery at some point) to trick the device to allow you to copy in digital bypassing DRM. I never tried it as I didn't have an optical cable and my sound card didn't have a TOSHLINK output back then. I always recorded in analog mode (from line in or mic). I didn't notice any difference in audio quality. It would be nice to have a data mini Disc drive connected on my PC to rip the mini Disc into files or record music from PC on Mini Disc digitally, but these things were not available here in Greece and even if they were, their cost wasn't worth it. Since the analog copy doesn't have any perceivable difference from the original, I just remained old school and used analog audio cables. At some point I wanted to digitize some vinyl records, so I can listen to them, in my car's CD player. I couldn't move the PC to the LP player or vice versa, so I recorded the LPs on Mini Disc and then digitized the recording. Paying attention to the recording level both from LP to Mini Disc and then from Mini Disc to the PC I had the maximum dynamic range without distorting the audio. I even scanned the LP cover and printed it for the CD cover! If I wanted to eliminate the occasional clicks or pops, Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition did a good job sampling the noise and then removing it.

This piece of software works perfectly (also even today on small portable minidisc recorder / players. (Running on an XP VM).

Screenshot_20240604_085943.png

Create the CD with Nero as an .nrg file (it mounts as a CD detectable with the recording software) then you've got a fast digital copy of your "bespoke CD" to MD and from the MD's pro recorder (Studio version) it can make an "Image" of a Vinyl (10, 12 or 7 ins) which you can with the built in DAC (digital->Analog converter) create your bespoke Vinyl. !!! XP had a "Virtual mounter" disk program (Alcohol 52%) which was free and allowed 2 concurrent "Virtual disks" to be mounted. Nero's .nrg format was recognised by the software as a valid audio CD.

Those PRO Studio units weren't (fortunately) riddled with DRM stuff which virtually killed a great format - far better than CD's actually !!! especially if you wanted to play in moving vehicles), plus Sony's domestic CD / MD software with it's rediculous music library handling restrictions (you had to check out and in songs etc) didn't help either.

The DAC's in even the domestic portable MD players / recorders are still far superior to those even in the latest iPhones and Samsungs and if you want blu tooth just plug a blutooth xmitter unit into the optical out /aux/analog out of the recorder.

If you like classical music then the "transients" are handled far better (assuming decent cans like sennheiser / bose etc) and avoid most of the horrible artifacts cheap bud headphones give or poorly ripped compressed music.

Added :

If you mess around with this stuff XP's networking seems to work far better than randomly performing network access on W11 for some strange reason -- but you do need to enable SMB1 for XP to access W11 / Linux HDD's. For sound in the VM use AC97 and rtl8139 as the emulated NIC adapter(s).

The MD data devices never came in Greece and the Mini Discs were too expensive, so I only had a few and erased them before reuse. Pity. Later USB flash drives had reached 256MB capacity making MDs obsolete. The same did Sony with Betamax. It was better than VHS but more expensive and lost the format war.
