Apps Completely Disable and Remove Copilot in Windows 11

Copilot_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to completely disable the Windows Copilot preview feature and remove Copilot from the taskbar, Windows Search, and Microsoft Edge for all users in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Copilot in Windows provides centralized generative AI assistance to your users right from the Windows desktop. Copilot in Windows appears as a side bar docked on the Windows desktop and is designed to help users get things done in Windows. Copilot in Windows can perform common tasks in Windows like changing Windows settings, which makes it different from the browser-based Copilot in Edge. However, both user experiences, Copilot in Windows and Copilot in Edge, can share the same underlying chat provider platform.

References:

You must be signed in as an administrator to disable and remove Copilot.

This will also disable the sidebar in Microsoft Edge.

Disabling Copilot will also disable Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge.

However, you can still set and use DoT or DoH in Windows 11. This will be the same as having Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge set to "Use current service provider".

This tutorial will no longer work to disable/remove the new Copilot app that can be uninstalled instead. It will still disable/remove Copilot from Search and Edge.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22631.3810 and Windows 10 build 19045.4593 (RP and Beta) Microsoft is evolving the Copilot** experience on Windows as an app that will be pinned to the taskbar. This enables users to get the benefits of a traditional app experience, including the ability to resize, move, and snap the window.

EXAMPLE: Copilot on taskbar, Windows Search, and in Microsoft Edge

Copilot in Windows Search is only available in Windows 11 currently.

I'm wondering to what extent Microsoft Windows can be altered before it is considered no longer genuine or authentic by Microsoft.

I used to "uninstall" Edge but never without consequence and of course a Windows Update would try to reinstall it. Eventually I gave up on disposing of Edge as the tweaking always seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. My main browser is Fire Fox and my main search engine is Start Page.
See the attached. Works for me (over 150 'puters so far) - rename to .cmd

Here are three hints you might want to try:

1) find the Feed channel number MS is using for it, for example, at registry key [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager] and dword it to 0
2) Find the override code, for example at key [HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides]. You can look for it in vivetool.
3) Disable all services that start with WPN in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]: You may have several (f.e. WPN, WPNService, WPNUserService and WPNUserService_somerandomnumber).

Let us know what you discover.

I am experimenting with different things. Now I noticed, if I sign out of the Microsoft account and stay with the local account, the Copilot Pro ad is no longer displayed. If I get new results, I will write here.

I cannot get rid of CoPilot from my Windows 11 Pro, v 10.0.22631 Build 22631.
I first toggled it "Off' in Settings/Personalization/Taskbar.
It was not in Settings/Apps/Installed Apps, and WindowsCoPilot doesn't show up in the registry.
I enabled "Turn off Windows CoPilot in Group Policy/ Administrative templates/Windows components/Windows CoPilot.

After a reboot, CoPilot still lives in Search and Edge, although it no longer appears in Personalization/Taskbar items .
Any suggestions on this? I really want it gone.

Is there a way to remove this?
View attachment 101152
Well, I managed to remove this, but it needs to be checked further to confirm that it is safe and without problems.

Doing the work: Just delete the "Data" from the following path. I took a backup of the registry key before deleting.

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AccountsService\Subscriptions

Note: After deletion, the Microsoft 365 Family & PC Game Pass boxes are also deleted. Unless we have edited the contents of the "Data" key as desired.

The second tutorial to remove from Edge works perfectly.
However, I can't run the .bat file to remove the icon from the Search.
I ran the file as admin but Microsoft Defender SmartScreen blocked running the .bat.
I use Bitdefender, Antivirus, and the MS Defender is turned off.

I cannot find this SmartScreen anywhere in my settings.
Thanks again for the help so far.

In the Taskbar search box, type: Smart App Control

I also run Bitdefender. I just disabled Smart App Control.

Here's some other things that may help...

That's ok. You should be able to unblock the BAT file using an option below first, then be able to run it as admin.

Success! I searched for "Smart App Control" in the Taskbar search.
Mine was already turned off.

But following the "unblock file" tutorial, I was able to run the batch file and...
the CoPilot icon is now gone from the Search box.

Thanks to all. Great tutorials and I appreciate the collective expertise.
