Convert digital to analog

Where can I get another DAC as pictured in the back of my modem because it has no clip to hold it in and easily slides out it’s important because it allows me to use the phone to fax the printer along with my computer. Thank you.

I'm sorry for the redundancy but my first attempt to show you this DAC failed by phone. This tan device behind my modem converts a digital signal to an analog signal enabling me to fax however a little clip that holds it securely is missing are broken. I'd like to have it secure. Does anyone know where I can buy one of these and what the actual name is? Thank you for your help..

This would probably be best sourced from your hardware supplier as these can vary quite a bit - Alcatel. I believe do these for their systems and I assume the other providers would do the same.

If you have to go to a generic item then a search of eBay or maybe Amazon are good starting points, but you may need to go to a more specific electronics component supplier

That thing looks like a standard RJ-11 splitter. They used to use them a lot when people had an answering machine that was separate from the telephone, or when you wanted to hook up a telephone device for the deaf (TDD). These things are widely available. You can even pick them up at the dollar store for next to nothing.

It's pretty small to be a DAC, and I would think that any digital to analog processing would be done in the modem, but hey, that's just the engineer in me talking. Your mileage may vary.

Agreed, that device looks exactly like the telephone line splitter I have. Don't need it any more, got rid of the landline due to constant scamming calls. I used it to split to a printer with the FAX support but hadn't used it in several years. The only other thing that looks like it is the Ethernet cable, is larger to accommodate a plug with 8 wires [instead of 4] that is not generally used to split Network connections.

If the process of digital to analog is in the gateway/modem, what purpose does this device serve, just splitting?

Right, that does not change digital to analog, just splits the existing signal to a second device, in this case it may be a Dial-Up Modem for landlines such as used by telephones and FAX machines and FAX support built into multi-function printers.

This is an example of a converter / adaptor specifically designed for use of an analog Fax machine, when only a digital line is available - as the electronics is quite simple they can be made small enough to just look like a part of the wiring loom. they basically give the fax machine access to the internet to connect with modern messaging systems.

They will usually have at least one Ethernet connector and One Phone connector (Input sockets or a moulded plug and a socket )

It is difficult to see from the image provided exactly what is the actual item required in this case It could be a simple "Dumb" wiring converter with the electronics located in the modem or a small single fax signal converter

Unfortunately I live in a big city with no mom and pop stores. Would Best Buy or Micro Center or Staples have them. I can briing it in to a store to be sure. RJ- 11 splitter? Have to bring it in to be sure. I have a Comcast store near me; maybe they will sell me the part.

These are the best shots I can get. I notice there is a slider in the side which wants to click firmly but doesn't. It could serve another purpose though. It is functional so no crisis except to order online if local not available.
So it is not clear whether it is a converter digital to analogue for the fax or just a splitter or both?

Your images are typical of an RJ-11 splitter for telephone lines. Yours show as plugging into a wall jack.

It looks just like it. Is it a simple splitter or a converter from VOIP which I think Comcast uses to analogue ?

Apologies for the late reply. Yes, as has been said by others, it is a simple splitter (IMO).

Call around a bit, to try and locate. You should be able to purchase for a low price.

Yes! Walmart is another place you can look. I agree with the others that it is just a splitter. Here is a Amazon link. Amazon.com : phone line splitter

Or one of the chain hardware stores like Ace. They would be more likely to have it than a mom and pop/neighborhood store.

Tip... purchase a couple of them. It should be very inexpensive, but items like this are becoming more difficult to find.

...you can still find them online, but the shipping cost is well more than the cost to pick up a couple at Walmart.
