Solved Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.22635.3130) (KB5034218) Install error - 0x800f0983

I've tried to get this update installed at lest 7 times that I can remember and I keep receiving the same exact error message. I've already reset the windows update settings in hopes that would correct my issue, but from performing a search on google it appears as though I'm not the only person having this issue. On my other windows 11 pro 64-bit computer this update installed properly. I'm so glad that this forum exists and hopefully someone has had this same issue and discovered a method of fixing it. Thanks in advance for any & all help that might get provided.

Maybe this is obvious, but:

You could try an upgrade install from an ISO. KB5034218 Windows 11 Insider Beta Build 22635.3130 (23H2) - Jan. 25 (use the link to uupdump.net)

Not guaranteed to work, and you'd want to image your current Windows drive before.

If you're unfamiliar with such an upgrade, note that you need to get an ISO that contains the same type of Windows (language, Home or Pro), if you wish to keep applications and files.

Thanks so much for your reply, I'm still trying some other things and will do what you mentioned as a last resort.

I still don't understand why people are still installing or in your case,
trying to install Preview updates. They will be part of the Cumulative
update next month.

I'm in agreement with @Flashorn. I don't do the preview thing either. I figure I'm better off letting others test it out before I apply it.
Dealing with troublesome updates has always been one of my peeves (y'all remember the misery WU caused back in the XP & 7 days. 10 & 11 are Cadillacs compared to that hell)

IF you also encounter troubles when the monthly cumulative update comes out, here's the things I try. One of them always works for me. I usually go ahead and do steps 1-5 before trying WU again.

1. Verify there are no corrupt system files going into the update.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer
(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)

2.run troubleshooter-settings-system-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-windows update-RUN.

3. Reset WU Reset Windows Update in Windows 11 Tutorial

4. CLEAN UP COMPONENT STORE - dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

5. Disable all third party AV completely, including Malwarebytes . Make sure no instance is running in task manager.


Try the update again.
6. If it still fails, do a repair install of windows Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial

Maybe I'm being too literal-minded, but "Davy49" was asking about a beta channel update. Not Release Preview channel.

You are absolutely correct. I missed that. But wouldn't troubleshooting steps be the same in any channel. Or is there something special about dealing with update issues in insider builds? I've never used anything but release.

No, nothing special, well not for the Beta channel anyway. The are just a conventional CU, same as you get in the Release channel. The same troubleshooting steps should apply.

As I've stated many times here in the forums I'm so glad that I'm a member of them. There's such a great group of people who are members that are always willing to help other people with their issues. On the other hand whenever possible I try to provide help to others as well. After utilizing some third party software I've got my issue resolved at least for now, if I knew it wouldn't upset anyone I'd be glad to provide some information as to what software I utilized, but since I truly respect shawn (Alias Brink) and everything that he does to make the forum better I surely wouldn't want to ever upset him by doing so. I actually completely forgot about this free software application that I've used previously & which I utilized again this time to correct my issue: Reset Windows Update Tool | Troubleshooting for Windows Update | Repair System Files, Registry, and Winsock I've also used this similar free software application: Homepage Both of these applications work very well, I need to state that this application that's contained within the tweaking.com application has to be run in safe mode for it to function properly, the great thing is that if you open it up in standard mode it displays a prompt about safe mode and offers the user a choice of putting your computer into safe mode.

Thanks for sharing. I was about to ask that you do exactly that as when I read your post the first time, this is
exactly what I was thinking. I think it's best when you find a solution for your problem that you also include
how you did it so that, others might have a solution to look at when it's their turn. Thanks again.
