Cut & Paste and Spell Checker Hangs Up Word 2003.

MisterEd, such a deal. I must have built that 8800 in 1975 or so. I intended on modifying a cassette player/recorder to store the programs and find a keyboard for it, as well, but I got so busy with work, family and other things, so it slid by the wayside. By the time I got back with it a friend showed me his Osborne-1, that at least had two small floppy disk drives, keyboard, RS232 and some I/O stuff. Where the 8800 went is a mystery. I thought about a TRS-80, but opted for the Osborne-1.

Was IMSAI in Austin, Texas? If so, it was one company that I was thinking about hiring on with later on in the late 1960’s before all the home PC stuff got started. It may have been another company. At the time I was working as a Project Engineer for Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory, Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio. I found out that the company I sent my resume to was over my head because one had to be a PhD to be a floor sweeper and my BSEE was still in the making.

Anyway, my friend and I were interested in more powerful PCs so I could do some astronomical work and the cheapest way to go was to creep up into the Intel *86 world that appeared to be progressing right along and fast. By the time I found the time to do the programming we were into later 486 machines and Visual Basic that allowed me to complete the spherical trigonometric equations. Like I said, being a tightwad and hate evolving into new software I just stick to what works for me. Weird I be.

Fascinating, @MisterEd. My first computer was the original IBM PC in 1981. I bought it along with boxed sets of Microsoft DOS, Microsoft Assembler, and Microsoft Basic. It's been an addiction ever since and I've loved the journey!

IMS Associates, Inc., or IMSAI, was a microcomputer company, responsible for one of the earliest successes in personal computing, the IMSAI 8080. The company was founded in 1973 by William Millard and was based in San Leandro, California. Their first product launch was the IMSAI 8080 in 1975. One of the company's subsidiaries was ComputerLand. IMS stood for "Information Management Sciences".

I knew of the Osborne 1 but never considered buying one. If I had wanted something like that I would have bought a Kaypro II since it had a bigger screen.

PERSONAL COMPUTERS; HOW DOES THE KAYPRO COMPARE WITH OSBORNE?

After the TRS 80 Model I, I bought a Lobo Systems MAX-80. It could dual-boot and run LDOS, CP/M 2.2, or CP/M 3.0. When it ran LDOS it could run many TRS-80 Model I and III software. I went on to buy several Atari computers including the 600XL, 1040ST, and Mega STE. The Mega STE was my first computer with a hard drive.

I didn't buy at PC compatible computer until January 1995. It had a 700MB hard drive. It came with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and DOS 6.22. I didn't really like that version of Windows. I mainly bought it because I used PCs with DOS or Windows in my schoolwork. In March 1995 I signed up for the Windows 95 beta program. I ran Windows 95 beta on the computer until Windows 95 came out in October 1995.

I started out using QuickBasic 4.5. Most people confuse that with QBasic. QBasic came free with Windows while QuickBasic was a commercial product. QBasic code had to be run with the QBasic editor. QuickBasic code could also be run by its editor but the code could be compiled to an .exe file. I went on to use Visual Basic 6.0 and and Visual C++ 6.0. Now I use Visual Studio 2022 Comunity Edition.

I owned several telescopes over the last 55 years. I donated my last two to the Von Braun Astronomical Society. Because of my health I could no longer handle them. Wernher von Braun helped start the Von Braun Astronomical Society. He led the German rocket team that developed the Apollo space program. He also helped the Army launch the U.S's first satellite Explorer 1.

Since 1960, my job was in electronics and computers it was easy to use main frame systems to do anything I desired as far as computing goes. So, personal computers were not in the news until later on in the 1970’s and it just didn't interest me until I needed to compute at home. Looking at the various commercial PCs I was not clued in much, so listened to friends who were getting into it. TSR-80 was not my first choice because Radio Shack was not my first choice in buying electronics parts. Plus, I used mostly assembly and FORTRAN in my work, so it was not readily available in PCs. But, the Osborne did offer CP/M and a light weight BASIC, so I went in that direction. Of course, the Osborne was very limited.

Later when using more powerful PCs I began to like BASIC so, like you I chose QuickBasic 4.5, Qbasic, QuickBasic and MSBASIC or variations of free stuff and so on. Then while working at the US Naval Observatory (USNO) in Miami and then DC, I got a copy of Visual Basic Pro 5.0 and have used it since then, maybe from 1996. I just got used to it. The USNO loves C and Unix and so on, so I used that at work, but VB5 at home. In fact, I wrote several satellite dish control programs in VB5 that they still use today.

Did you ever use the free versions Visual Basic?

They used to have have free standalone versions of Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual C++, Visual J#, and Visual Web Developer. They were called the Express versions. They eventual went to free Express versions of Visual Studio. You could develop programs using any of their supported languages from within Visual Studio. Now the free versions of Visual Studio are called Visual Studio Community. If have the 2022 version.

With Visual Studio Community 2022 if I select to create a Visual Basic desktop project I have many choices

If I select to create a Visual Basic console project I have fewer choices:

2024-08-04 17_18_29-Microsoft Visual Studio.jpg

I also have Visual Basic 6.0 and Visual C++ 6.0 installed. I probably bought them about 25 years ago.

MisterEd, I did some years ago but was not happy with them. Maybe it is worth another try, thanks.

BTW, using LibreOffice I ran into a problem with making tables. I'm sure it is something I am doing and have not searched out the cause. I revised an older Word doc with a long table in it and the table looked like it didn't space the vertical rows out properly. Since he table was 30 or mor eros the result was a small block with all grey lines only very small spaces. Guess I'll have to work on that.

Years ago I worked for a company that had government contacts. We had to deliver Word documents to them. They got paranoid because not everyone had legal copies of Word. They did not have enough licenses for Word so some people like me had to use OpenOffice. When I demonstrated that the documents that I were to deliver did not format correctly with OpenOffice they got me a license for Word.

There are a few free Office compatible software suites. Other than OpenOffice and LibreOffice the only one that I have used is FreeOffice. I like it better than LibreOffice.

FreeOffice installs three standalone programs TextMaker, PlanMaker, and Presentations.

TextMaker - comparable to Word
PlanMaker - comparable to Excel
Presentations - comparable to PowerPoint
.
These programs by default save to their own formats but can also save to Office 2007 and newer formats

When you install FreeOffice it installs shortcuts on your desktop.

You have a choice of user interfaces.
This is the current Office (2007 & newer) Ribbon interface.

You can also select the classic Office (2003 & older) Menu interface.

It seems like this thread has gone a bit off topic ...

To solve the issue of Slow Cut and Paste in Word 2003 you might want to try a manual install of KB907417 Update for Office 2003. When looking at my update history, I saw that this update had failed to install multiple times. I was experiencing slow cut and paste in Word 2003 on two different laptops (HP and Lenovo, both running Windows 11), and this solved the issue on both. Like jeffbeish, I never experienced the issue with Excel 2003. Word 2003 spell checker still does something weird so that I have to click "Undo Edit" when I first call it up, but otherwise it runs fine.

There are several sites which explain why the update KB907417 fails to install automatically and how to install it manually. I believe (but am no longer certain) that I downloaded the install file from here: Microsoft Update Catalog .

Comparatively it looks like I'm a Johnny-come-lately, since my first computer was a Sharp PC5000 purchased around 1986 or 1987. Productivity-wise I still pine for the Windows XP User Interface.

Thanks, I found something in the Catalog, but it was not exactly KB907417, but I downloaded "OTKLOADR" and worked that to get the Word 2003 complete. So far Word appears to work okay. The spell problem is like you described, so I can live with that. Time will tell. The OTKLOADR had a repair on the menu, so I did that. We'll see. Thanks, and I will keep you posted.

Okay, I think Word 2003 is working better now, but still have the spell check problem that is manageable. But, with MS anything can happen, huh? :-) We'll see.

Oops, it started the same old problem over again. Back to LibreOffice. It works great and I'm too old to fight Word again. When I get real bored I'll fix it.

Whie tweaking my virtual memory setting for a minor reason I noticed that QWprd2003 stopped the cut & paste problem. I just know it is playing with my nerves, but maybe that was needed!

Why are you tweaking with virtual memory? Maybe 20-25 years ago people used to do that. Now its best to just let the system manage it.

It was just a temporary tweak I did to see what it would do for a program I use in my Win-10 PC. Had forgotten about tweaking the memory. This one is back to normal. I just noticed that it effected Word. Probably only a temporary thing anyway.

After installing Office 2003 on my new Dell 5620 laptop I have experienced the same problems with Word as I did on the 3510 laptop. Both Windows 11. There has to be some strange problem with Windows 11 and Office 2003. However, the other Office 2003 programs work great. I guess I'll just give up using Word 2003. Something I just cannot see that makes Word spelling weird and the cut & paste hang-up comes back for some strange reason. Maybe it is a Windows problem.

Well, I still use Visual Basic Pro 5.0 without any problems and paid for it. I also paid for Office 2003. I paid for a 1993 Saturn and it still worked great when I sold it 15 years later, so why should I not expect the same service from Microsoft? Hum, maybe software companies are too woke?
