I've had my XPS 15 9510 since February 23, 2022. I use it every day. I have no idea how much battery is used if you don't use it for a few days. I only know that when I close it overnight there is no noticeable battery used when I open it in the morning.

Those Control Panel options are for what closing the lid does, my link to Bios settings controls what happens when opening the lid on a machine that has been shut down, as opposed to modern standby.

I did field testing for Dell on a new i7 12xxx CPU XPS 15 laptop last Dec/Jan. There wasn't a model number yet, that I knew of. It had the power on when opening the lid, but didn't notice any loss of battery power. I used/charged it while in use (testing) so can't say how the battery usage would have been. I don't know when or how long it had been sitting around before it was shipped to me but the battery icon looked like full charge. I don't recall checking the actual charge value. The only thing I remember was it took me some time to get used to new style trackpad.

You're right. So far, I haven't felt the need to change from the default Modern Standby setting.

If the laptop isn't plugged in the battery will drain. Once the battery reaches a certain percentage the laptop will shut down.

If the laptop is off (not sleep or hybrid hibernation) the only way to start is by starting the boot sequence on BIOS.
I reinstalled Win 11 on a Lenovo laptop and the option to power on/off by lid open was on BIOS

Okay can others confirm if that you shut it down and then close the lid... then you don't open your laptop lid up for few days, the battery will also drain? When laptop is shut down, I do not have it plugged into outlet.

If that is the case, why would anyone have it shutdown by default with the modern standby?

The other thing is this. I have an older chromebook where it also powers on when you open the lid. But if you shut it down and don't use it for a long time, there is no battery drain.. at least I don't think there is? So do people recommend changing this setting or not? Again my concern is opening the lid turning on the laptop isn't good because you could open it accidentally.

I did not go to BIOS to make this change and using my laptop as is. There is nothing wrong with this as most people probably keep it like this as default right? Your battery doesn't wear out though when it is shut down and like this right? When I shut down... it is shut down right and not like a modern standby? Each time I press shut down, it shut down and I close the lid.

Then when I open laptop, I open lid, then dell logo shows and ask me for my bitlocker pin and then my windows password. So that mean it is shut down properly right? Otherwise it wouldn't ask me for bitlocker pin?

Can anyone here confirm going to BIOS is the only way to prevent this opening the lid to turning on your laptop? So you can't go to windows settings anywhere to change this? I am hesistant to go to BIOS so that is why I ask this. Also... why does the power button by default go to sleep as oppose to shut down? Do most of you change that at least?

Can others confirm there that with the dell xps 15 9520, that modern standby is the default after you shut down your laptop? Why would they choose this or a regular shutdown?

So to those of you who shutdown your laptop and then turn on your laptop say a week later or more, do you lose any battery because of this? Why would default be modern standby? So when you carry your laptop to other places while putting it in laptop sleeve and bag, is it safe to do so because it is in modern standby and not shutdown?

I hadn't used my old laptop for a few weeks. When I tried to power it on today it wouldn't until I plugged it back in. The battery was at 0% charge. It seems it must been been in Sleep mode when I unplugged it a few weeks ago causing the battery to slowly be drained.

When I got my Dell XPS 15 9510 in February of this year and it came with Modern Standby, one of the first things I did was an Internet search on Modern Standby so that I would know what it was and how to use it. I also read Microsoft's documentation on Modern Standby. Since I know what it is and how to use it, I like Modern Standby.

@newmann Do you need help on understanding how to use Internet search?

I use my XPS 15 9510 every single day as it is my main computer. I've never had a problem with having enough battery for how I use my computer.

@newmann You have not filled in the specs for your computer in "My Computer". It would help to know exactly what you have. Click on "My Computers" below to see what I mean.

After 8 months of using Modern Standby on my Dell XPS 9510, I haven't experienced any problems.

If I ever experience what happened to you, I will report it on the forum.

I truly don't know what happened. When I was finished using the laptop, I closed all of the programs I was using. At least I think I did. instead of shutting it down I just closed the lid. The next morning the laptop wouldn't start, and it was very hot to the touch. I really thought my laptop was toast. To my surprise once it cooled down it was ok.
