Solved Dell XPS 15 9570 Notebook 4K Touchscreen not working in Windows 11

Greetings everyone:

I have a Dell XPS 15 9570 Notebook with the 4K Touchscreen which originally shipped with Windows 10 that I upgraded to Windows 11 before Windows 11 came out with the Previews. The issue is I don't usually use the Touchscreen and I know it worked under Windows 10 and probably under Windows 11 as well but in another discussion about touchscreens, I noticed it wasn't working but the touchscreen is enabled in the bios and also working inside the system bios. Dell does not seem to have any drivers for the touchscreen as their support information on their site states all touchscreen drivers are included with Windows. Now the question is how does one add the touchscreen back into device manager as this is what device manager shows:

What controls touchscreen function for mobile devices is not consistant across manufacturers or even within one manufacturer between their different models. Some have their own driver such as N-trig, Duosense, or Elan. In others it is controlled by third party USB drivers. I'm guessing when you installed/updated to 11 you did not backup your drivers beforehand so there is no way to know what you originally started with. If you did an upgrade, 11 would have used basic MS drivers if the drivers used in 10 were not compatible with 11. Basic drivers will not control touch.

Others across the web have asked this same question. I read many of the threads. No definitive answers.

When I went to Dell site and used Windows 10 as search criteria, there were no N-trig, Duosense, or Elan drivers listed for 10 nor were there any for 11. I did find SMedia USB3 eXtensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) Windows 10 driver but it was not listed using Windows 11 as criteria. As that device is 5 years old, quite possibly SMedia has not issued driver for 11 and you are propably using the default MS usb 3.1 driver which would not provide touch functionality. (if indeed it is that driver that controls it) You can try the Win10 driver or You might also run Dell's "Let Dell update your drivers" to see if they will install it. No guarantees. Go to support site for your dell and enter your service tag.

Installing the latest bios and chipset drivers also might have an affect on touchscreen along with Intel serial i/o driver. Latest Intel chipset is dated 3/25/20. Latest bios is 1.27 .9/12/22. Latest serial i/0 controller is dated 8/30/21

You can jump off into this if you wish but I suggest you create a system image first, or at the very least, create a system restore point. But going by all the complaints I would not hold my breath that any of it will work.

I think the problem is finding someone else who has the same machine running Windows 10 or 11 that has the 4K touchscreen working and seeing what their device shows. @TraderGary, I remember you had the same model machine before.

I believe that either the touchscreen did work in Windows 11 or it didn't and if it did, maybe one of the Windows Repair installs to the latest Beta Insiders might have done something to it.

You mean ASMedia USB3 eXtensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) which is actually for a dock and not the machine itself if what Dell labels is correct for the category as I have that installed and it's a hidden device because I don't actually have the dock.

The actual machine in the device manager shows which means it's a generic Windows driver it seems:
Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller (Microsoft)

I have a question, when I try to install the ASMedia manually basically Update Driver in Device Manager, then Browse my computer for Drivers and point the drive at a folder, it would say I already have the best driver installed.

There is the other option to Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer but with the list, how do I determine which is the best one to pick?

I have the latest chipset drivers from Intel and also the latest BIOS. Trying to phase this correctly, isn't the touchscreen supposed to be part of the LCD itself or come from the same manufacturer being Sharp in this case or does Dell actually have a different supplier for the touchscreen display?
Just curious as I didn't know the touchscreen was related to USB. Wouldn't Windows still detect the touchscreen and just list it as Other Device if it can't figure out what driver is needed?

Just tried the ASMedia and selected the ASMedia USB3.1 eXtensible Host Controller and rebooted but it didn't work as the .inf's for the ASMedia driver shows PCI\VEN_1B21& which does not match the hardware ID:

8086/8087 is usually Intel as woudn't a Intel Core i7-8750H CPU include the USB 3.1 as part of the required Coffee Lake chipset?

The screen itself is made of different materials than a regular screen making it also an input device. Touchscreen functionality is not just a feature of the screen itself, but also requires specific hardware and software support within the laptop. This includes touch sensors, a compatible motherboard/bios, and drivers to enable touch input.

Yes, I figured it is also a input device as I would have thought the display itself would be a specific model that includes the touchscreen functionality so one can easily track down what drivers are needed for that specific make/model of the LCD. But still, wouldn't Device Manager still see the touch screen as a device but just an unknown device like other devices that Windows doesn't have drivers for as you can't update a driver for a device without an entry in device manager. And ofcourse, I didn't know it had anything to do with USB either as I thought USB devices would be external.

Yes, I had the Dell XPS 15 9570 several years ago. Today I'm using a Dell XPS 15 9510. (Specs are in "My Computers" below.) Both were/are configured with touch screens. I've never had any problems with Dell XPS 15 computers and I've had several now. I've always used only the support apps Dell includes on XPS machines, Dell Support Assist and Dell Command Update. Those two support apps have always kept my XPS 15 computers running problem free.

The thing is Dell never offered drivers for the Touchscreen itself so the question is what I am trying to find out is what drivers were actually used for the Touchscreen part on the 9570 in Device Manager. The problem is I wouldn't even know when it was missing as I avoid touching the screen most of the time due to having to clean the fingerprints afterwards even though I remember I did touch it accidentally once and it was probably under Windows 11 so not sure when the Touchscreen part actually disappeared.

I like to do Dell factory resets several times a year. All required drivers would have to be included in the Dell reset partition as everything is up and running before I ask for a Windows Update. If it were me, I would simply do a factory reset and set up what should essentially be what the computer was when new out of the box.

Just saw this with a random Google search.... The only difference is my touchscreen does work in the BIOS and the setting is there so it's obviously connected but I don't have the device in the HID section referenced:

I got it working and this post will be long so it will help others in the future with touchscreens in general, been under the weather for the past 2 weeks but basically random searching on Google helped as it had to do with the thinking of it should atleast show a device detected whether known or unknown as other devices so I first found this:

This shows there is a Device in Device Manager in the Human Interface Devices even if the Touchscreen wasn't connected or working.. But in my case, it was working as I do see the option to turn the Touchscreen on and off in the BIOS and can also use the Touchscreen in the BIOS which this one was not able to.

If the Touchscreen feature was detected as seen here from the BIOS, there would still be a I2C device under Human Interface Devices even if it wasn't working properly or connected properly even though it's not the same model:

In both cases, I am sure what happened was the Touchscreen was detected but the cable was not making full contact... so anyways, I decided to search for "touchscreen dell xps 15 9570 device manager" and landed in this thread:
and one of the answers gave a useful hint....


And I had to lookup on Touch gestures for Windows - Microsoft Support to find out what the gestures were and as I use neither the Touchscreen or Touchpad, the gestures did not work either including the simple pinch to zoom in and out which is what I used so then I looked in Device Manager and while I do have a
Intel(R) Serial IO GPIO Host Controller - 3450 in System Devices which when opened showed:


The driver date and version looked fishy and Driver details says No drivers are required or have been loaded for this device.
I did not have any other Serial IO devices in System Devices.

Dell's latest Intel Serial IO is v30.100.2020.7 which I have a copy of since April 22, 2022 and the one I last installed from station-drivers was v30.100.2132.2 WHQL which was installed on October 23, 2021 originally after I was already using Windows 11. So I tried v30.100.2020.7 first by running the Setup.exe and it mentions that I am about to install the following components:
Intel Serial IO GPIO Driver
Intel Serial IO I2C Driver
and it adds two Intel Serial I2C devices in System Devices as well as a bunch of things under Human Interface Devices.
And it did prompt to reboot but even before rebooting, both the Touchpad zoom in/out pinch/stretch out worked and the Touchscreen worked as well and remained working after rebooting. Photos for everything will be below as I updated to Intel Serial IO Driver v30.100.2132.2 WHQL which worked before and after rebooting.

When I ran the Setup.exe for the Intel Serial IO Driver v30.100.2132.2 WHQL which applies to v30.100.2020.7 as well, it showed:

which has a lot more devices than earlier in the thread as it added the following:
HID-compliant pen
HID-compliant touch pad
HID-compliant touch screen
HID-compliant vendor-defined device x 3
I2C HID Device x 2
Microsoft Input Configuration Device x 2
to what was shown in post #1

and for System Devices, the Intel Serial IO has 3 entries instead of just 1.
