I am pretty sure I use something vital that relies on WebDav, but it’s been so long since I have done a totally fresh install, I forget what it is. I shall remember in the very near future as I fresh install 23H2.

EDIT: wondering if it’s the security application that allows me to view my CCTV cameras on my PC :think:

yes but they way network discovery using smbv1 works requires computer browser for workgroups doesnt it?

Yes, but they're bundled in the same Features. Deprecated means not installed by default in 23H2, and permanently gone by the next milestone release. SMB v1 is a ridiculous security nightmare that should justify removal of outdated PC's and network servers.

In general yes, but there are plenty of specialized setups still in production

It appears Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication services are the recommended modern workaround to continue using network neighborhood without computer browser enabled.

With SMBv1 on - (To enable the WS-Discovery Protocol)

Starting the following services:

Batch:

SC start fdPHost
SC start FDResPub

And change them from Manual to Automatic(Delayed Start):

Batch:

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\fdPHost" /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

It's so easy for I.T pros to say "xxxx is a security nightmare".

Maybe it is for corporates etc - but for many home / domestic users who have some old equipment like smart TV's etc which still needs SMB1 for connectivity if you stream stuff from computer to smart TV or even some android firestick type boxes via programs like KODI / VLC (media server part) etc from a home LAN then this overblown concern with security on SMB1 is of zero consequence.

People aren't going to rush out and buy new smart TV's etc every time Windows goes bonkers and wants ever increasingly expensive hardware.

Some people are running NAS boxes and some old QNAP type of things which are many years old anyway and also might only support SMB1 as well as running earlier versions of Windows either on real machines or as VM's.

I've 2 perfectly good working NAS boxes from around 2015 vintage which still work excellently as a file and media server and for backups. Streaming multi-media to several remote TV's and laptops around the house still needs SMB1 protocol in my place.

Here's one with around 50TB of HDD storage on it -- runs 24/7 -- rarely re-booted -- sometimes if updating a linux kernel but 99% of stuff in Linux doesn't require a re-boot after update. It also runs around 12 VM's of various types including W11 perfectly (even though machine is an MBR BIOS machine. (32 GB RAM plus 2 physical XEON processors help with that of course.

I have in any case a proxy server to isolate domestic LAN from the Internet which does the security properly anyway. Remember if you have kids etc visiting -- YOU as the account holder of the ISP service are responsible for any pirate / other dubious content either downloaded or uploaded from /to the Internet.

MS first deprecated SMBv1 back in 2013, but has allowed it to be shipped (uninstalled) for backwards compatibility.
SMBv2 has been around since 2006.

I find it fascinating you're always pushing the latest & greatest tech, but stubbornly defending SMBv1 when SMBv2 & v3 products have been around so long. It's like saying we all have cell phone service, but the oldest radio frequencies have been retired, so your 15 year old phone doesn't work now.

Some of us have little choice. My router shares out a usb HDD that's plugged into it, but the router only supports SMB1. To access it I need the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client enabled in Windows. That is possibly of little risk, enabling the Server would be the greater risk.

I assume Microsoft separated the ability to disable SMBv1 between client and server on recent Win10 installs because a device accepting SMBv1 connections as a server is inherently more vulnerable than using SMBv1 from the client side. Is this assumption correct??

Yes. That assumption is probably correct, though I'm not aware of MS explicitly saying this.

I find them rather helpful for my three students I'm preparing "remedial" Windows 11 tutorials for. It's the ideas they provide, not the actual stuff they send.
