Desktop goes into portrait orientation after windows 11 comes out of sleep mode

I have recently installed a new NVME SSD and a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro.

Due to inactivity my computer is set to go into sleep mode. When coming out of sleep mode the desktop is randomly in the portrait orientation rather than the landscape orientation it is set to. This is a pain to try and go into settings to adjust, due to difficulty in managing the mouse in portrait orientation.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please, as to what I can do to stop this happening.

What is your graphics card? If it is Intel and you have Intel Graphics Properties, go set orientation to 0 degrees and then disable any key combinations to rotate the screen, so it is not triggered accidentally. Not sure if you can lock orientation from Settings, System, Screen or elsewhere.

Yes there is a setting there, mine is set to horizontal. Check there.

Check to make sure your display is set to Lanscape in both Nvidia Control Panel and in Windows Display settings.

Yes, probably one of them (most likely Windows) is set to portrait and hence your issue. Set both to horizontal/landscape 0 degrees.

They are both set to Landscape. When the pc comes out of sleep in portrait orientation the windows setting had changed to portrait. I did not think to check the NVIDIA settings but will do so next time it happens. However, if NVIDIA is currently in landscape, assume that neither of these settings are what is causing the problem.

I am in exactly the same position. Am running Windows 11 Pro, and have recently installed an NVME SSD with windows installed from scratch.
After coming out of sleep I randomly find the screen in the portrait mode. It might only happen 2/3 times a week. I have an NVIDIA graphics card and have checked that it is set to landscape mode in the NVIDIA Control panel. All drivers are up to date and I am running the latest BIOS for my Asus motherboard. I do not have 'rotation lock' available in settings. Any help will be appreciated.

Can you run powercfg /a from a command prompt and tell us what sleep states are available on your system?

Thanks for that. At least we are not having to consider any complications of S0 Modern standby.

I suggest
1 Check with the motherboard maker that you have the latest Bios
2 Check that you have the correct display driver & reinstall it [not just check for updates] to eliminate the possibility that your current display driver has been corrupted.
If problems continue, check whether or not they are evident
3 In Safe mode Boot to Safe Mode - ElevenForumTutorials
4 For another user account, even if you have to create one for the test. Add Local User Account - ElevenForumTutorials

Portrait is the default position if you haven't rotated the screen. So it is not too weird why the system wakes in portrait. The question is why doesn't remember the last orientation. Try having the screen at landscape and then rotate it from Settings, Devices, Display. Return it to landscape. This might disable the auto rotation and keep it in landscape. Also there might be a setting to toggle auto rotation on/off.

Thank you spapakons. My understanding is that portrait is the default position for phones etc, but for desktop screens and tv's the default position is landscape. I have tried rotating through the various orientations, but it doesn't stop it randomly opening from sleep in the portrait orientation. As I mentioned in my original post 'rotation lock' is missing from my settings for some reason. For the moment I have followed Try3's advice and reinstalled the NVIDIA graphics driver, and now just have to wait and see if that works. Thanks everyone for your advice, it is much appreciated.

Reinstalling the graphics driver did not help. Coming out of sleep today it was again in portrait orientation. This time I did not go in to settings, but merely did a restart. It restarted in the portrait orientation, but about 2 seconds later it reverted to the normal landscape orientation
