It's been at least several months since the problem started and now it's getting pretty aggressive or I'm just getting fed up with it. It seems that any game that I play, randomly the game will seem to freeze or lose focus and I have to alt-tab or press the windows key to bring it back to life. This is how it goes...

I'll be playing any game on steam for example. I'll be playing and then all of a sudden the game freezes but the game isn't actually frozen because I can hear the sounds and the game is still progressing as if it was moving and there is no "not responding" text either. I have to press the windows key to bring it back to moving. Which makes me think for some reason, something is taking focus from the game but leaving the game visible yet frozen. I can also move my mouse around and actually do things in the game but the picture doesn't move. For example, when the game freezes, I can still move my mouse and command units in an RTS game or move my character in an FPS game because I'll hear the actions going on, but the game visually is frozen in place.

Things I have tried

1. I thought maybe a software was taking focus so I used an app called Focus Logger and all it shows it explorer.exe as taking focus and it doesn't match the times when I lose focus.
2. I reinstalled the AMD graphic drivers
3. I've manually closed down software running in the back ground one by one while testing and none of the software that I see on task manager seem to be the culprit.
4. I've run antivirus software like Windows built-in protection and Malwarebytes Premium and I removed some PUPS and 3rd party software that were flagged but problem persists.

It makes playing games difficult because I never know when I'll lose focus of the game. It seems completely random and it can happen 3 or 4 times within 20 seconds or it can happen 1 time in and hour. I don't seem to notice that it happens outside of games. Maybe it does happen but it isn't noticeable. It seems to only happen during playing a game.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it is happening with all online games, perhaps a latency/ping issue with your Internet Service Provider (although I am not sure why the win key gives it a kick) or the GPU has a problem? If it is also happening with offline games i’d say the GPU?

Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the input. It definitely isn't a latency issue. Most of my games are offline with only cloud steam saves. And I can leave the game frozen for as long as I want and press the win key to get it moving again.

As far as a GPU issue goes, if it is causing the issue, I would have to test it with another GPU that I don't have on hand. I guess I could try using the on-board GPU but I am not there just yet.

Might be time to get an actual vid card.
I don't know what specific games you're playing, but an APU can only handle so much.

There may have been some misunderstanding. I am currently using a dedicated GPU and the problem is occurring. It was stated that it might be a GPU issue. So I said I didn't have another dedicated GPU on hand to switch out for testing but I could remove the dedicated GPU and try using just my on-board graphics to further troubleshoot to see if it is indeed a dedicated GPU issue.

Or too little RAM / video RAM?

Can you explain where this "game mode" is from "settings"? Are you referring to the AMD software? Windows?

My PC has 32GB of ram. All my games are purchased through Steam or CD keys purchased through 3rd parties then activated on Steam. So yes all my games are genuine. I also have a 5 inch external screen that reads out all relevant data like GPU usage, temp, cpu and so forth. The game I am currently playing is called Necrosmith 2 which requires very minimal resources to run. But it also happens with games like Pal World, Hell Divers 2 and it would seem any game experiences the problem. Reason why I don't think it is a particular game causing the issue but more of a Windows/hardware issue.

I was able to find Game Bar in the Windows settings. It was off by default so I have turned it on and I will test.

I was able to locate the game mode option in the windows settings. I enabled it but I am still experiencing the problems. Any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Try finding a driver from a couple of versions ago. But you said this has been going on quite a while. I am thinking an in place upgrade might be an option?

Please Note: OPTION TWO is now the only option unless you are on an insiders version of Windows (Option One).
So option Two only.

I ended up finding the culprit. Something within the AMD Adrenalin software is causing the issue. I had already performed a factory reset on the AMD Adrenalin software for my GPU as a troubleshooting step before. However, this time I performed this step but I opted out of installing the Adrenalin software and just installed the drivers. I've been playing the games that have been effected by the problem for hours and not a single issue. So there is something within the AMD Adrenalin software that is causing the issue. Maybe some kind of overlay take over. I may reinstall the AMD Adrenalin software some time down the road to investigate further. However, I am enjoying the peace and quiet of playing my games without constant interruption.
