Privacy and Security Enable or Disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 11

Windows_Security_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 11.

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is an antivirus software that is included in Windows 11 and can help protect your device from viruses, malware, and other threats.

You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

If a third party antivirus product is installed, registered, and working correctly, Microsoft Defender Antivirus will automatically disable itself. The Windows Security app will change the Virus & threat protection section to show status about the AV product, and provide a link to the product's configuration options.

If you disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus, you will not be able to turn on Periodic Scanning.

It is required to turn off Tamper Protection before being able to disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

9 If you enabled Microsoft Defender Antivirus, you may also want to turn on Tamper Protection again.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hello, :alien:

Just to confirm, did you disable Tamper Protection below to prevent Microsoft Defender Antivirus from getting automatically enabled again?

Yes I did. The furthest I got was real-time scanning disabled, that works. But I want to get it 100% shut down and use clamwin instead. I know that av might not be fully solid, but I simply want to scan when I want to scan and not have it do all kinds of stuff that I am not aware of

If Clamwin is registered with Windows Security, that could disable Microsoft Defender AV for you as well.

The way I installed it is definitely not being registered by windows defender. I will see if there is another way. Maybe I installed the portable version

Looking at this below, I don't think it will register with Windows Security.

Thanks for helping out Brink :) Yes this is what I thought. Atm I do not know any av that isn't worse than windows defender itself. I would like to be able to disable all antivirus features and just do manual scans with Win clam, online scanners or any av that allows manual scans only and that doesn't interfere with my system at all.
