This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off allowing the Microsoft Photos app to run in the background at startup for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Starting with the Microsoft Photos app version 2024.11080.30001.0 in Windows 10/11, you can now allow Microsoft Photos app to run in the background at startup to improve performance.

Reference:

Here's How:

1 Open the Photos app.

2 Click/tap on the Settings (gear) icon at the top. (see screenshot below)

If you do not see the Settings (gear) icon, then click/tap on the See more (3 dots) button and click/tap on Settings.

3 Under Personalization settings, turn on (default) or off Performance for what you want.

That's it,

No such option in latest version: 2024.11060.20006 - or maybe it's cause of some tweak applied long ago (shortly after installing Windows - i have have a tendency to Disable every optional setting - which is scheduled to auto-start or run in the background - even if you never use or have any need for it / just in case "there's 1 in a million Windows users" who happens to use any of those settings or apps - they're all set to start and run in the background by Default, not to mention... their number is quite high too).

Same issue and question here. It's pretty darn ridiculous!? Hate MS and their shenanigans. I've tried everything including Apex deployment uninstall reinstall individual components. I love the photos legacy but unfortunately won't work without installing the photo app as well on Windows 11. Driving me nuts, photo legacy and photo apps disregard ernie any app background performance settings even if set to disable. Task manager under app activity it shows photo and photo legacy uptime at 5 hours or 12 hours for example and actively changing upwards with time, while the computer was shut off completely or restarted 10 minutes ago. Driving me crazy. Have a feeling it has something to do with OneDrive or their AI and MS trying to force us into use of these products

Unfortunately, this Performance setting is no longer available in Microsoft Photos version 2024.11070.15001.0 and newer.
