Enabling a shutdown sound on Windows 11

Yeah, no, everything on mine is exactly the same. This is quite strange.
Do you know if there's a way to turn on that "history" tab? Maybe some logging could get us some clues.

or Command Prompt as Admin
Code:
wevtutil set-log Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational /enabled:true

Also - you're on a laptop according to your profile. that's not checked, right?

yep, completes no issues. task runs manually and when shutdown is executed

Well, this is interesting... first attempt to try it, I went and enabled history and hit restart, but it was held up for a moment due to an open explorer window... much to my surprise, during this setback, I heard the sound play! The logs when I got back in checked out well enough—task triggered, task created, task started, action started, action completed, task completed, task terminated. I restarted again, this time it shut down without waiting and I didn't hear the sound. Logs when I get back start the same, task triggered... but then, action failed to start, task start failed. Unlike before, the last run result is now 0x8007045B—the same error the first user was getting, it seems. History log shows "Error Value 2147943515", seems to be related to a permissions issue... but how is that possible? The task is being run by SYSTEM... even says so explicitly.
Task Scheduler failed to start "\Shutdown Sound" task for user "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM". Additional Data: Error Value: 2147943515.
Very disturbing...

try this, go to

and change that dropdown to "Stop the existing instance"

Urgh... starting to struggle to make use of these logs. I went to change the setting, and I noticed the task said it was already running. Felt like a good sign. Changed the dropdown as directed, restart... nothing, no sound. Get back in, log shows a successful run of the task? That can't be right. Restart again; again no sound, but this time the log shows the error from before... and further, it shows a "task registration updated" event right after, which, well I definitely didn't do any updating of task registrations as the computer shut down, at least. Another restart, same outcome—but no "updated registration" this time.
Also noted a registration update immediately before the successful run log I mentioned at the start, guess I just missed it before. That one, at least, would coincide with me updating the option.
All of the errors have the same details as before, only difference is the timestamps.
...anyway, have you noticed tasks can be exported? I've attached mine here (forum doesn't allow us to attach .xml files for some reason so I've changed it to a .txt—just change it back), seeing if it works or not on your end ought to be pretty insightful.

Same thing again... the first time it did actually play, but only because the shutdown was stalled by an open explorer tab. Tried again after and it never got through, and log shows the same errors.
...so like what the hell? Is my computer just really fast at turning off or something? I don't know what to make of this.

under Triggers, add 3 new ones. makes sure all are set to "On an event" and set the IDs to:

41
6006
6008

(plus the original 1074, so you should have 4 triggers now)

No dice. Log shows the task starting 4 times, then finishing and terminating 4 times... all at the exact same time, I might add.

when you right click and run the task, the sound plays?

instead of shutdown, try restart and see if it triggers it.

also - change it to your username instead of system, and input your password when prompted and see if it runs under your perms (narrowing down the possible causes)

Hold on, I'm onto something.
I noticed the sound had a bit of leading silence, so I cropped it down a little in Audacity. Hit restart again and I heard... half of it, before it was cut off.
That's our cause then, I guess. But what now?

How long is your sound (in seconds)? Shutdowns are pretty quick as the system is killing all processes to power off.

About 3 and a half seconds, but the last part is only fadeout. The actual sound is done about 2 in, and I only made it halfway through that last time.

Set it to the default sound in the example tutorial I linked. See if it cuts that off or plays as it should.

Ah, well, this is a bit awkward, but, I kind of replaced the original shutdown sound file a bit ago as part of a test... no matter, though. I set the task to play a different default sound in there, a shorter one (Windows Logoff Sound.wav) and found... well the first time it played totally completely because Audacity was open and wanted me to know if I wanted to save, and then the second time it didn't play at all, I guess because it was still confused by Audacity or... I dunno. But I did one more restart after that and it almost played in full, I could hear the very end didn't quite finish.
This whole thing feels a little pointless if I can't use anything longer than a second, doesn't it? There must be something else to it.
