OS
Win11
Internet did not work after the latest Win11 updates ("Not Connected, Secured"), so I decided to restore from the latest image I have created using the Win7 Backup tool in Control Panel (although I was using Win11). The image restore worked for my ROG Ally (also running Win11), but somehow it stopped half way through and gave below error:

The system image restore failed.

Error Detail: the volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. (0x800703ED)

All drives including the external HD are GPT,and no bad sectors were found after the scan for the external HD. Now I cannot even go back to my Win11 OS, and kept getting an error saying that the Windows could no repair...

I would hate if I had to erase everthing....my only hope is that backup image I got on my external HD. Any ideas how to restore it at this stage? Maybe using a third party Win restore app under WinRE?

Try deleting all partitions on the HDD to see it will help resolve the error message.

Yeah I have thought of using "CLEAN" via diskpart, but is it worth the risk of deleting everything on my drives (C drive for OS and D drive for data)? In that case, my only hope is the backup image...

Now you know why Windows 7 backup and restore is deprecated. You need to use a modern program.

Well The image you tried to restore will delete all data on the disk so will Clean command if you want to boot from Windows 11 on HDD you have to make sure no data or Windows 11 partitions deleted when you tried image restore.

Have you run chkdsk on your c drive and any other partitions on the internal drive?

Well The image you tried to restore will delete all data on the disk so will Clean command if you want to boot from Windows 11 on HDD you have to make sure no data or Windows 11 partitions deleted when you tried image restore.
I see. The restore actually stopped about half way through the first time I tried restore, which has probably erased all my data and my partitions already anyway....So if the restore works after I clean the HDD, will it restore my previos partitions (i.e. C and D drive) or it will restore everything to one partition?

The disk image you created will hold all the data and partitions on the date it was created.

Good point. I just ran it on my C drive which is my OS. I will now run it on my other partitions
I have chkdsk all three partitions (C,D and E), and now the restore is making some progress without any error so far! Fingers crossed it will go all the way to the end...

You can only execute chkdsk on partitions that you said deleted also try mounting the image file to recover your data.
