Explorer crashes after RDP session

I have win11 pro on my desktop and connect to it sometimes from a laptop (also win11) over RDP. After disconnecting and then logging in locally explorer won't resize or I get the spinning blue disc of death. Browsers and apps are all running normally. Explorer is completely unresponsive though and I have to end the task and then re-launch it (from task manager). idk if its scaling or something to do with different resolutions between the 2 machines. Desktop is 4k (3840x2160 | 150% scale) and laptop is 2kish (2880x1800 | 175% scale). I connect from the laptop in full screen. And to top it off, explorer will crash in the RDP session as well, same thing - end it and re-launch.

It's an odd one, hoping someone has seen it before and found a resolution. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. First until we can find a solution to your problem, I suggest a workaround to make restarting explorer easier.. Make a shortcut that will kill and restart explorer for you. In the target box put
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & start explorer.exe
Name it (I named mine Kill Explorer. I also assigned it a keyboard shortcut of Ctrl + Alt + / so I could kill explorer using my keyboard if necessary.)
Right click on the shortcut and assign it an icon. You can pin this shortcut to taskbar, start menu, or leave it on desktop.

Here are some suggestions to try to solve your problem. I have a strong feeling your have a piece of software causing the problem.

1. Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. Establish a remote connection, then disconnect to see if the issue persists. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. 2.
Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer

(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)
