I have a TP-Link 7 port powered hub which has 7 HDDs connected to it.. all 1TBs and 2TBs salvaged from laptops in enclosures except for one WD 2TB..

.. all the HDDs except one older 2TB work fine.. the 2TB randomly disconnects from the hub while all the others are still connected..
.. USB selective suspend setting is disabled and USB power saving is off.. for the hub as well as the HDDs..
.. restarting or plugging it again brings back the HDD..

.. one thing is that this HDD is a bit older than the others but the enclosures are all new.. switching enclosures or ports doesn't help..
.. this HDD disappearance happens even if i connect it to a USB port directly..

.. running a CHKDSK now on that drive.. got a couple of hours to go on that.. no errors so far..

If the all other connected devices function but the 2TB disconnects, it could be a bad USB port, dying HDD, bad cable or external closer faulty.

Use crystaldiskinfo utility to view health report of the HDD.

@FreeBooter .. as i said in my post.. its not a bad port, bad cable or a bad external enclosure..
.. not a dying HDD also..

I had an old external HDD that kept disconnecting when I was using USB 3. It worked fine on USB 2, but if I hooked it to a USB 3 port it would work for a while, then power down. I finally just used the drive in a hot swap bay and all was fine.

One more thing. With all of those drives attached to your hub, you may be exceeding the amount of current that the hub can provide. The first thing you will notice if that is happening is that older, more power hungry drives are affected first and may not work reliably. Newer, more efficient drives use less current and may still run in your configuration. I doubt this is the case as plugging the drive direct into a USB port like you did, still caused the same problem. I suspect that the drive is using more current than the port can provide. It may be the spec, or it has changed with age. Hard to tell.

I have a similar USB 3 hub but it differs by having switches controlling each port, don't have to keep unplugging to disable one. It is Self-powered so never have a power issue. I use the Sabrent clear-plastic cases for 2.5" drives. Also have 2 x 4TB WD My Book drives plugged in.
