Is there a simple way of removing selected folders from the left hand pane (see screenshot) to de-clutter it ??Explorer screenshot.webp

Disable "Show all folders" in Options and then pin required folders to Quick Access?

You may also be able to Unpin those above This PC, they usually are just shortcuts to the actual location as show on the right-click and Properties of them.

Thank you one and all for the advice. Between all the tips I now have things as I want them. I

Incidentally, I believe the cause of the problem was 5 separate recent bloody Windows updates. I remember once turning off automatic updates but somehow they force themselves back on. I'd like to have updates only when I want them. Any tips on that?

you can use powershell to hide specific updates:

or you can use gpo to set updates to manual:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage End User Experience = Configure Automatic Updates set to 2

regedit set updates to manual:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU = AUOptions - set it to 2

WuMgr is a portable app that is good to control updates (use one of the above to set them to manual download/install first):

You can have some control over updates but be aware that Windows can install without notice or force some and that OEMs can also do updates, just got one on my Dell Notebook for a BIOS update.
