this is for a new dell laptop with win 11 installed by dell

I have about 500gb of files to copy from my win 10 box to new win 11.
copied a 15gb bunch via win explorer across my local net. many of the copied files are marked with the red circle.
they seem to be ok, ie, they open ok and there's no info in the properties to indicate some thing is wrong.

same problem with newly created files saved from both faststone capture and win notebook.

did not any errors searching the event viewer.

gemini thinks its indicative of one drive problems, I have not yet uploaded any files to one drive so out of space should not be an issue

this is real disappointing to say the least for a brand new box and new win 11 o/s, any ideas what this might be and how to resolve

A red circle with a white cross means that a file or folder cannot be synced. You'll see this in File Explorer or on the OneDrive notification area icons.
Click the blue or white OneDrive icon in the notification area to learn more about the problem. It appears you have exceeded your onedrive storage limit.

Unlike what you have been accustomed to in years past, by default, when using a MS account, your documents, pictures, and videos default folder location is Onedrive, NOT C:\users\yourusername. Only when using a local account is the account and PC NOT tied to onedrive.
You are given only 5 gb of free onedrive storage. If you have copied 15gb of files over to new device, you do not have enough free onedrive storage to accomodate that amount of data in onedrive.

Your options are:
1. buy additional onedrive storage,
2. purchase Ofc365 which insludes 1 tb free ondrive storage(single user plan $69 yr, or Friends and family plan $99 yr for 6 users each with 1 tb storage),
3. move some of the files out of onedrive onto secondary drive or external media,
4. unsync the computer and your user account from onedrive and move the files back to your C: drive. (Note: there is a special procedure for doing this that must be followed or you will end up in a mess.)

thanks for your help, I think I will disconnect one drive and use another service for files I want to have cloud access. is there any documentation of disconnecting one drive that you recommend?
I had disconnected one drive on my win 10 box and seem to remember it was difficult, it seemed to keep coming back!

You first have to turn off backup folder syncing. This tutorial tells you how and also how to get your files onto your local drive.

If this happens, then you could try option three in the tutorials below to restore the default folder location and move your files manually from Onedrive into the folders..

2. Then you have to unlink account & PC from onedrive.

Once you do this the files you have in onedrive will remain there until you login to Onedrive on the Web and delete them.

3. You can then either uninstall Onedrive or disable it. I prefer to disable it. Open Task Manager>Startup Apps
Find Onedrive in the list and, right click on it, select disable. This prevents Onedrive from auto-starting.

4. If you want to uninstall it instead, the best way is to use Revo Uninstaller Freeware Portable. You’ll find Onedrive under the Windows Apps section. Be sure to scan for and delete any leftover files and registry entries Revo finds. Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download
