Folders not automatically refreshing after KB5032190 update

I hear you. I am 53 and have had Windows machines going back to some version pre Windows 95 (both personal and work computers), and this is the first time I have bumped into this particular problem. Will see if the registry tweak keeps working or if the issue quickly returns.

I experienced this refresh problem for the first time during the Windows 7 era.
Others have been reporting it since, I think Windows 98.

And in checking that para, I found something written out already that I could have just pasted in instead of having to use my brain again.

I have to report that KB5035853 (latest Windows 11 update) has just fixed the auto refresh issue for me. I just tested it with multiple folders. I have edited, duplicated, copy and pasted, tested on images with properties removed & with original properties, etc. It would seem that Microsoft silently looks at some user complaints and without acknowledging their previous errors, they silently correct mistakes. Some may think that they got lucky, but I do not think so. I tested before the update & the issue was clearly present. I said "what the hell" and installed KB5035853. I was surprised to see the issue fixed after the update was installed and restarted. Hope it worked for others too.

Dam! I'm sorry. There must be a combo of installed apps which causes the issue in the first place. I guess I had the right combo on my system to reverse the issue after the update. Only wish Microsoft would come clean with their conscience to help others resolve the conflict on our systems. Terribly sorry for giving you false hope. Even though I'm happy with the fix on my end, I'm thinking positive for all of the others. As small as this issue may seem, it is really annoying. Going to have a margarita today. Cheers!

I think you are referring to
1. Enable Background Refresh:
  • Open Registry Editor by pressing Win + R and typing regedit.
  • Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Background\Refresh.
  • Look for a DWORD value named AlwaysRefresh. If it exists and is set to 0, double-click it and change the value to 1. If it doesn't exist, right-click in the empty space on the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it AlwaysRefresh, and set the value to 1.
  • Close Registry Editor and restart File Explorer (right-click Taskbar, select Task Manager, find File Explorer, right-click and choose Restart).
I am jealous.
I had tried the same fix [in both Windows 10 & 11] and the problem reappeared within a week.

I work with hundreds of images weekly and have folders open in medium & large thumbnail view. All folders are sorted by name as a default. Before installing KB5032190 update, all folders would refresh automatically without having to constantly hit F5 everytime I edit or duplicate. If I hold CTRL and drag (before KB5032190) to duplicate, the dupes use to automatically be placed in front/before the original. After installing KB5032190, the dupes are now placed at the end of the images in the folder and I have to constantly hit F5 to refresh and place them in the desired order. This even happens when I edit an image and save. The edited image gets placed at the end of the folder until I again hit the F5 key. I have been searching the internet for many days. I have tried all of the various fixes, rebuild thumbnail cache, system repairs, etc. The only thing I was left with was uninstalling KB5032190. I do not wish to disable Windows update and block this patch from ever returning but looking for a solution or suggestion to this issue. :(
Well said. I think I am turning off updates. I really don't know how they help me anyway.

The problem is back. So it went away for about a month and now it's back. It seems to stick around for a few days then gives me a break for a few days before returning. Just trying to ignore it now and manually refresh. LOL it's like a virus that is just trying to annoy me now. This is too funny. I'm literally smiling as I write this post.

I read of a fix involving having to take a trip to the local hardware store, buying something heavy, taking it back home, dropping said heavy object onto the PC about 8 to 10 times, smashing your door lock, calling the insurance company and telling them some guy just kicked my door in and smashed up your computer whilst screaming “AI IS GOING TO TAKE OVER”

I'm back guys and I have great news. I've been searching for a fix as all of you have. I recently came across a video about tweaking W11 to have some old features. They discussed an app which could restore many old features. I downloaded. It gave me some interesting file explorer, taskbar, start menu and other modifications. I found it interesting but not exceptional. After an hour of messing around I decided to test our "sorting issue" & low and behold the problem was gone. I said to myself, this is too good to be true. I restored my computer from the last image to recreate the problem and applied the updates and tweak again and "Im fixed". I have tested at least 30-40 folders & they instantly sort. The program is called ExplorerPatcher Setup program. hope it works for you too. Watch the YouTube link first to see the interesting tweaks before you test. The only fix I appreciate now is the file sorting issue. The other tweaks were optional bonuses after I discovered the fix. The word "video" on line one above has the link to the YouTube video. Good to hear, Marley. Yes, Explorer Patcher. If you search that term here you might be surprised. 1000’s of posts about it within threads. It is a favorite here. However I am not sure I have seen anyone state that it fixed their sort issues., regardless, I am happy for you.

Thanks, this problem started suddenly for me in the last few days. I had already found 2, 3 & 4 and tried and my Windows 11 is up to date.

I then looked at 1, and found I had no Background key. I made that and added DWORD as instructed and the problem was instantly solved after I did a File Explorer restart again (I had already restarted File Explorer numerous times prior to this with no effect).

I realize this thread is a little old, but I had the same issue until I was able to fix it today. Auto sort worked in some folders, but not in others. There was no pattern as to the number of files in each folder. Resetting settings didnt work, regedit solutions didnt work, deleting automatic and customdestinations didnt work, nothing listed anywhere on the www worked. The problem seemed to start for me when Windows changed the File Explorer to the new format, whatever that is, about 1-2 years ago. Soooo, having read that OneDrive or other backup services can cause this when things are pinned to quick access in file explorer, i checked to see what I had pinned there: In addition to Downloads, I had Pictures, Videos, Documents, and Music - nothing else. When you right click near the pinned items, you get a menu. Show Libraries was not checked, so the Libraries that would show up under the pins area was not visible at the time. Soooo, having no other folders pinned, I didnt think that was my issue, and I continued to be frustrated with file explorer.

Today, while just playing around in file explorer, I decided to tick the Show Libraries option. I immediately noticed that the icons were different for Music and Pictures when comparing the Libraries and Pinned versions of the links. So I unpinned EVERYTHING, and re-pinned everything by right clicking on Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos from the "Libraries". When I re-pinned Pictures and clicked to open my pics from the pinned shortcut, file explorer gave me a screen where I had to choose the folder where my pics were located, much like how one would choose which pics folders to view in a viewer app. I chose my pictures folder from my user folders, and BAM. Problem finally solved. Hope this helps u.

I agree with you.
The problem comes and goes of its own accord and has been doing so since Windows 98 if not earlier.

I reboot if I see it happening and this seems to do the trick each time.
I try to reduce occurrences by rebooting every day but it's perfectly possible that I'm kidding myself.
