Just saw the post saying that MS will start "auto updating " suitable devices from 23H2 to 24H2. All our 4 PC's are on 23H2 with the get updates toggle off. We normally pause Updates then resume to check and pause again. Windows 24H2 is offered but we can close the box and it disappears until the next check. Does this latest bulletin mean that the toggle is going to be ignored and 24H2 will be downloaded without us knowing? Thanks.

By following this tutorial, Windows Update can be blocked from upgrading you to 24H2.

Afterwards, WU will continue serving you the normal 23H2 monthly updates (when updates are unpaused), until 23H2 is no longer supported. Undoing the TargetReleaseVersion change will unblock the attempts to upgrade you.

I would suggest Option Two, using a registry file.

Yes. However, you can choose not to install the update but you'll still keep being offered it. Also, you can pause Windows Updates for as long as like - see this tutorial.

Thanks guys. As things stand, whenever I Resume Updates 24H2 is offered and you can just close the box and it disappears until you check again, which is fine. My understanding however from the bulletin is that 24H2 would be auto downloaded irrespective of your own choices? The "Get the latest updates " toggle is off. Is this correct? Mitch.

TargetReleaseVersion instructs WU that you're not interested in any upgrades. Which means Windows stops nagging you about 24H2, and it's prevented from downloading 24H2 to your PC's. The "Get the latest updates" doesn't on work on blocking 24H2.

It just means you'll be in the back of line, when MS suggests 24H2 to you. MS doesn't upgrade everyone at the same time, that would kill MS's servers and flood them with support calls. So 24H is gradually deployed to different targeted PC's. Early adopters can tell MS they want to be first.

But eventually WU will get to you, unless updates are disabled or you've done TargetReleaseVersion to indicate your preference.
