I type what I want to search for in address bar, and it then opens Google on appropriate search page

The only thing I can suggest then is to change Google back to Bing in address bar and search setting default, close and reopen Edge, and change the default search engine back to Google again.

Wondering here. Is the laptop using the built in iGPU of the processor or using a dedicated GPU? You may can help eliminate the video driver as a possible issue by deleting/removing any updated video drivers and letting the system use the built in generic video driver.
As is it needs to be determined whether the glitch is being caused by the Browser(Edge), Google or something else.
Something else you might try....connect your laptop to an external monitor via the HDMI port(if equipped) and see if the issue remains.

Thank you for your reply, but at 78 your suggestion is too technical for me. I use a PC if that makes any difference?

Just because they've always been there doesn't mean an extension isn't the problem. Many times when the browser updates, extensions also have to be updated. Sometimes it takes a while before the developer of the add-on catches up with the changes in the browser. At least disable every one you have and test.

Yeh, same here. Mind you the OP's detail-less responses, of just a couple of words, to the suggestions doesn't instil much confidence. The lack of detail about what was actually done each time leaves reason for doubt as to what the OP actually did and whether it involved the correct steps ... for example the OP's idea of flushing the browser cache >> "No difference" response, might not be exactly what was suggested/intended

When i said 'no difference' I meant that having done what was suggested that the problem still existed.
I think it is more a google problem than Windows as when I search Flickr or other photo sites this problem doesn't happen.
