Has anyone had issues installing the 2024-02 cumulative update?

First, press Win+R, paste msdt /id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic into the box, and press Enter. There's a yellow warning at the bottom with a link that takes you to a page saying that msdt will be removed next year, but when needed you can still get to the troubleshooter like explained on this page: Windows Update Troubleshooter - Microsoft Support

If the issue persists, run sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth as an administrator.

Resetting the Windows Update components like someone else told earlier in the thread AFAIK has the side effect of clearing your Update History so, if you prefer to keep that history when possible, maybe you might want to consider to hold off the reset at least until you already tried the above mentioned possible fixes.

Doing a Windows repair via an in-place upgrade has the side effect of resetting some of your settings in Windows Settings back to their defaults, albeit it will retain most of them. Some say it avoids wasting too much time on trying all the other possible fixes because, alledgedly, these often don't remedy the Windows Update problem that you are experiencing. Personally, I, am not really convinced about that, though. At least when it's just Windows Update giving you this specific error code that appears in your screenshot, I think that these other possible fixes are still definitely worth giving a shot first.

Thanks, Yeah I did run the update troubleshooter which didn't help. I did the sfc as well and dism as stated in my first post. Strangely I ran the reset update components but it didnt reset my update history.

I have tried pretty much everything I have found online for resetting windows update but it never seems to actually reset it. It always looks the same every time I launch it. Those 2 updates are always sitting there waiting to be downloaded and never install. Software distribution folder, all the common stuff doesn't work.

Just an update, I ended up doing a repair install and that fixed the issue. Was so strange. Never had an issue with a windows update like that before.

Well, that surprises me. I'm sure your OS is in top shape and still having problems with this update.
I really would like to know what in the hell is in this update that is producing so many errors.
Is there any way to open up an update file and looking at it?

Use the Expand command to 'unzip' the .msu file.
Your command line must be in the location the .msu file resides.

Code:

expand windows11.0-kb5035942-x64_3f37174fadabd9d29ffe92a92b3422557586f645.msu <targetdir> -f:*

Then open <targetdir> and open the .cab files at will.
The deployment information you need to unzip is SSU-22621.3364-x64.cab within wsusscan.cab
The file to look at is _manifest_.cix.xml (120kb)

I've had KB5035942 on my 3 Notebooks and 2 Desktops Win11 computers since 3/27/2024 plus on my 2 unsupported Notebooks with no issues.

I've been dealing with one member on the MSI forums that has now the only option of
an inplace upgrade to solve this update fiasco. Could it be that since it tried to update,
it might have left some code behind that would prevent someone from reinstalling or even to
try to uninstall the update if it would show up in the history. This poor fellow has to wait
an hr for the update to finish and fail only to see the update trying to re-install upon a restart.
This is the worst I've seen in some time from MS.

This was my last W10 machine..., the Feature Update to W11, and subsequent CU's went okay, then everything bottlenecked with this KB!
If it doesn't clear up with the next PT, I might try an In-place upgrade/repair/reset, or whatever!

So to sum up I ended up trying all of the following before finally deciding to repair install. Also a reminder that my system was working perfectly with no issues in sight besides this update failing to install.

I ran all of the following commands:
DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /SCANHEALTH

DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /CHECKHEALTH

DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH
Sfc /Scannow

All came back all was well. Other updates installed just fine except the cumulative updates as shown in the first image post. For example, my office updates and the update for the nat framework and windows defender updates all went through with no issues. I figured then the issue was something strange with just that update.
Tried manually installing the update from windows update catalog website. This failed.
Tried running the reset windows update components from here. Not only did this not work, it also did not seem to reset windows update at all.
Tried all of microsoft suggestions found here. Still no success.
Booted into safe mode and wiped out all software distribution folders and contents inside the catroot2
This caused windows to boot and blue screen, (which I have not experienced on a home machine since windows xp!)
It auto repaired itself, (thank god) and then booted back up into windows like nothing happened. Weird.
I then intianted a repair install with updates enabled. It started to go through and then after restarting said it was undoing changes to my computer and once booted, claimed it could not install windows 11 and that it had failed.
Almost giving up, I decided to try @Brink advice about not choosing to update during the repair install. This worked and my windows install was successfully repaired.
Once booted, it was successful and I saw the welcome screen after logging into my account. I then opened windows update and saw the failed updates waiting for me there. Thinking that the repair install didn't work, I tried to install them again. There was no pause updates option (it was grayed out) otherwise I would have clicked that and then hit resume updates to get it to search fresh.

Anyways, once I chose to install them, it disappeared and started searching for updates fresh. It then found both the base and preview and installed the base first and then the preview and worked just fine.

So strange. I have now turned off the get the latest updates as soon as they are available option.

I am so happy I did not have to reinstall windows. I need to make a clone soon haha

The Catroot2 is for Windows updates and will regenerate itself upon a reboot. I haven't heard of
anyone needing to delete this folder since the days of XP.

Glad to see that you were successful in repairing the OS and able to use the PC once more.

yes, you shouldn't delete the catroot folder or the catroot 2 folder itself, but to sometimes fix win updates issues you can delete everything in the catroot 2 folder to fix corruption as it should be recreated automatically at boot.

KB5036893 is full of bugs! Folks are reporting lag, random reboots, and full on unresponsiveness

KB5036893 update for Windows 11 is here, however, it has been causing havoc for many users who have installed it.

I took the jump and installed the updates on my Windows 10 and to my surprise. they installed
and didn't even complain about it. took 20 minutes and bingo, restarted and voila, updates
installed.
