Heads Up to Folks using a Microsoft email account, DO NOT WAIT to see if you are affected by this change

authenticator - I don't want to use my phone number to do that. No thanks. 👎

web password - Now that I do use and it works well in Thunderbird, but there's a slight learning curve setting it up.

Log in through the Outlook webpage in your browser. You then have to set up two-factor authentication in your Outlook account.

Then go back to Thunderbird, delete any accounts in it. Close Thunderbird, and re-open it, and then re-add your accounts to it like they were in there for the first time, brand new. Make sure it's updated to the latest version. That's how I go mine to work.

Write down both your Outlook password(s) and your web password(s) because your going to need to enter both of them during Thunderbird setup. The set-up wizard should do the rest.

You basically now have to have two separate passwords for each Outlook account.

BT ( British Telecom) is a major ISP in the UK. Their email accounts are all MS accounts, but this is not obvious. Hundreds of customers are losing access to their BT email addresses. BT has been warning customers for at least a year. They can still access their email with a web client but this is more limited than accessing via an app. I have always advocated for people to use email independent of their ISP. I think Gmail is hard to beat. If I change ISPs I will not be affected. Even better would be to register your own domain name - then your websites would be truly 'portable'.
My emails are synchronised across any device I have. I can access them online or offline (at least for recent ones) and Gmail has excellent filters and options to set complex rules.

If you wanna use Outlook email accounts for Thunderbird, you have to set up two factor authentication for each account.

Once you get it set up, you never have to worry about it again. Just make sure you keep a backup of your Thunderbird profile safe somewhere.

And you can also see some visual steps below:

This one's for gmail but it's the same principle.

~

It's getting used to the idea that you now need two passwords: - - -

A password for your account (the one you use to log into)

A password for the app (that Thunderbird needs to access your account)

Trust me, I had difficulty grasping that concept at first, but once I set it up it made sense.

Maybe you got lucky. Or maybe Microsoft hasn't caught up to your email account, yet.
Perhaps. Beats me! 🤷‍♂️
So you’re saying, in your Microsoft account, every one of these is OFF and doesn’t say “up to date” on any of them?
Hell if I know! I just added the email and I can send and receive messages! 🤷‍♂️

Should show online in your MS Account under “Security”
eM client & Thinderbird has the correct authentication that Microsoft is insisting on, based on what I have read, it gets a pass.

I believe

  • Select your avatar in the top right, then select View account.
  • Under Security info select Update info.
or it will state so on the security page without having to click update.
