Solved Hey hardware guys. Need advice on m.2 drive

If you are not a gamer, video editor or graphics designer, you won't probably notice the difference. I would go for the best priced Gen 4.

One of the things I like about my 2TB Samsung 980 PRO is that it doesn't use a separate driver from Samsung. It just uses the StorNVMe driver from Microsoft so no compatibility issues of any kind, and so all the various imaging software also including everything else just works... without further ado. I also am limited to PCIe 3.0 speeds and not a gamer; I use my laptop mostly to enjoy reading internet gossip about subjects like whether Samsung makes good reliable SSDs (and in fact the moment when this gossip stops for a whole 5 minutes is when I become all seriously worried... and depressed... like every normal person would).

I bought this SSD, new, on Cyber Monday of 2021 (i.e., almost two years ago). Cyber Mondays are when some of the absolute best online deals can be found. I remember back then the normal price for this SSD was still 287 Euros or more, if you had to buy it new. But I bought it new for just 229 Euros. So, if you're not in a hurry, consider waiting till Cyber Monday.

Thanks to you all for your sage advice. Knowledge of newer technology hardware is not one of my strong suits and I tend to require validation in my decisions. From what you all have said I've deemed that I can't go wrong either way in choosing between the Hynix or the WD drives. Except for maybe startup time, for what I do I doubt I would see any difference in using either of the 2 different generation drives even if in the future I owned a later generation mobo. (With my age and health, I just don't see a newer mobo in my limited future unless this Dell blows up

).

One thing I have learned from what you said and all I've read in my research is, if I owned a laptop, IMO thermals and power consumption alone would make choosing SKHynix over WD, Samsung, or anything else a no-brainer. Again IMO, that's an important consideration for anyone else who might come across the thread.

When I built my rig, I went with the first generation of Sabrent Rocket 4 NVMe drives (three 1 TB drives). Those are now in enclosures and connected by USB.

When I upgraded my GPU, I also upgraded the drives to Samsung 980 Pro NVMe (three 2 TB drives).

I can definitely say I've been extremely happy with the Samsungs, and before that I was pretty happy about the Sabrents as well.

@badrobot Impressive graph. Wow, wonder why crucial can't work out sustained write speeds like WD & Sabrent. For that matter, why can't Hynix. Sure would like to have seen Samsung on that graph as well. As popular as they are, I wonder why it wasn't included.

Samsung? Here you go.. for 980 Pro. 990 Pro is a bit too pricey for now

SAMSUNG 980 SSD 1TB is a decent choice, but the 990 is the top choice.

I don't use C for anything. Can't learn it due to medical problems

Really? As mentioned before:

F=9/5 C +32. (F=1.8C +32.)

Memory is inexplicable. I still recall Planck's constant (6.63 E-34 Js). Why? A Web search would produce it as fast as I could type the query.

This old timer is pleased with what WD BLACK SN770 gives me on PCIe Gen3. Not the fastest but fast enough for a Gen 3 system board. A Gen 4 stick isn't going to improve my speeds and those cache drop outs can be a killer no matter how high those new caches will rocket up to. Seems like the bigger they are, the lower they fall. Not so much so with my selection.

The 980 PRO is the way to go if you have a GEN 4 platform; but if all you have is PCIe GEN 3 and you don't plan on moving up to GEN 4 then it's really pointless to pay the premium for 980 PRO. Don't get my wrong, I love my SAMSUNG PRO silicon in my GEN 4 unit. Glasskuter will never see these speeds on their GEN 3 platform, which limits out at 3500. Just sayin'.

Didn't want to change your mind because it seemed as though it was already made up but, I did allot
of research before landing on the ones I have in my notebook. I think you did read my last post on my
thread. I almost went for that one but, the price here in Canada is always fluctuating. You really have to be
on the ball to get a good price these days.
One piece of advice If I may, make use of Thermal pads even if it's only 1 or 1.5 mm. It will make a difference.

Not sure what you're disagreeing with here, but if a GEN 4 stick is the goal I think Flashorn has aced us both with respect to bang for the buck. Glasskuter still isn't going to see GEN 4 speeds even with the SKHynix Platinum on their PCIe GEN3 system but @ 55 bux US it's hard to beat. Too bad about that short-lived cache though :::shrugs::: Practically all NVMe has this problem.
