Hibernation suddenly broke on Windows 11 24H2

Hello, guys! I have a problem - for some reason (not sure what triggered it) my computer stopped going to hibernation mode. It can go to hibernation by button, but itself it doesn't go to this state. I tried changing the user to check if there's some app is preventing it but no luck. powercfg /requests - showed nothing "NO" to everything. Performed sfc /scannow too, says system is fine. However, it just stopped working a few days ago.

I tried to set 1 min to hibernate and started checking everything, but nothing worked. In command prompt i tried all powercfg commands I know to check if it's enabled or anything. It shows that everything is right. There's also no any notification in Event Viewer related to some issue at the timestamp when PC should have gone to hibernation.

Can anyone suggest where else to look up? It's so annoying to me cause it started randomly. And yes, I don't use sleep mode cause for some reason my PC doesn't wake up properly from sleep mode so no, I can't use it instead of hibernation.

I can't roll back since i can only do clean install. But it was working with 24H2 for a few months too. Is there some new update that broke it? I just didn't find anything in Google regarding that

24H2 is the buggiest feature update I have ever seen on windows 11.

Shame you can no longer roll back. I would make sure your bios and video drivers are up to date and keep checking windows update for updates.

Okay i see.. sad to hear! I thought there's something i could do on a system or registry level to fix that. Cause it started randomly a few days ago, I didn't do anything specific to my PC. And all programs have been updated as usual on schedule. And hibernation was working with my BIOS and video drivers previously. However, not sure I will be able to update my bios since manufacturer doesn't offer any BIOS updates for a few years. However this never was an issue until now.

What does event viewer record when trying to hibernate?

I'll admit I always use the hibernate command or start menu button to go to hibernate, I have never used the idle way to hibernate.

Thanks! I just checked it including the hibernation file size, it should be full cause i get hibernation as available option. Also, as i mentioned before, the hibernation works perfectly from start menu and by button, if i trigger it manually. The problem is with a timer function. It just doesn't hibernate as before after a set period of time. It was 180 mins for me and it always worked. I now changed to 1 min for troubleshoot. Unfortunately i didn't find what's the cause of the issue.

Everything i see on forums comes to incorrect settings for hibernation. As for me - i just didn't find any broken setting in my system. Not to mention the fact I didn't touch anything in relation to power settings so far.

that is odd. I can only assume it's either a program preventing idle or bug in 24h2.

What does event viewer record? Sorry I had edited my earlier post asking more things after you replied.

Yes I also thought there might be a program preventing, however it doesn't prevent from sleep. I said previously i disabled sleep because of incorrect wake-up related to my BIOS or something. However, for troubleshoot purposes i enabled sleep, set timer for 1m to check, and it worked perfectly. Computer went to sleep. So if there was some software it would probably not let my PC go to sleep as well. There might be a bug in 24H2, since it performs updates frequently. If so, this is sad, cause such bugs never get fixed and If i create a support ticket to Microsoft it will end up with a suggestion to make clean install. Basically all solutions from Microsoft Support Team end up with "Clean install". Which is funny cause for this bug to appear i didn't have to clean install windows. It appeared itself, without clean install...

As for event viewer - well it says actually lots of things. Not sure i'm familiar with all events and etc. Maybe you could specify what should I look for exactly? Like.... some keywords that might be related to this issue.

Also, try doing a sleepstudy

Code:

Okay, so far I didn't find any Kernel-Power related lines in Event Viewer. Sleepstudy didn't show anything unusal except for the fact the last hibernate was before 19th Dec. And then it never triggered that state.

Is this solution targeted for a PC not being able to enter hibernate state? Cause my PC can, just manually, not by a timer

UPDATE. For now i don't really understand what's going on and what's triggered this.... So before i said that my particular PC had problems with Sleep Mode, it couldn't wake up properly under any settings. But hibernation worked. So now, when hibernation works, but computer doesn't hibernate by itself i tried to trigger Sleep Mode but disabled Hybrid Sleep Mode. And PC woke up properly - Wi-Fi led ignited, Lock screen lit up. As it should. No black screen anymore after waking up. But... thing is..... the first thing I tried previously to fix my Sleep Mode was disabling Hybrid Sleep Mode. And back then it didn't help. That's actually was the reason i decided to go for hibernation...

But that's not all. The wake up from sleep problems only started when i upgraded my CPU. Before that on my old CPU the Sleep Mode was working perfectly with Hybrid Sleep Mode actvated. So now I have a question: since i had to disable Hybrid Mode, are there any potential downturns of this? Is this sleep mode much worse or anything? Cause if i don't fix my hibernation I might stay with a solution that at least works for now.

Okay i filled in, but how does it help? It doesn't depend on PC i guess.

So as for sleep mode issue. I discovered one interesting thing: if PC goes to sleep by timer, it wakes up fine. But it takes a bit longer for it to go to sleep. If I put it on sleep manually with button or start menu, then it goes to sleep much faster but doesn't wake up. How to fix that?

So basically I have 2 issues:

1) Hibernation only working by button or start menu command now, it doesn't hibernate by timer.

2) Sleep mode works by timer correctly, but PC doesn't wake up properly when entering sleep by button or start menu command (it starts working but i see black screen and no wi-fi or ssd led activated)

There is no quick fix for troubleshooting power issues as there is no one size fits all. Power Issues are a process of elimination. Make sure you have the latest bios version and chipset drivers from the manufacturer.
Other Things I would try in no particular order, testing after each one:

1. First make sure there are no corrupt windows files.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer

(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)

2. Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

3.. Run power troubleshooter - open a Command Prompt window as admin and type the following command:
msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id PowerDiagnostic

4.. Test using safe mode. If it works correctly in safe mode it would point to a driver.

5. I would certainly turn off hybrid sleep and test. This will revert to using S3 sleep and hibernate according to your settings which is more predictable and what we've been using for years.
From Power Options choose “Additional power settings”, click “Change plan settings” for the current power plan. then click “Change advanced power settings”. In the advanced settings, set the “Sleep”->“Allow hybrid sleep”->“settings” to “Off”, press “Apply” and “OK”

6. Disable fast startup

7. As last resort, Disable hibernation and use sleep instead[/c]

Okay, will try to reply accordingly:

1. Did that procedure twice in the last few days trying to figuring out what's happening - nothing changed.

2. No conflicts apparently were found since nothing changed with a clean boot as well.

3. Troubheshooter showed no problems.

4. Safe mode didn't bring any changes, also I guess testing such issues in Safe Mode might not be right, since for example i didn't even find Dislpay Sleep option under safe mode - guess power options are cut there.

5. Hybrid sleep is now disabled and I will give a comment on that later. However, it was on and hibernation timer was working fine.

6. Fast Startup was always enabled for me and previously I had no issues with hibernation. So i see no point to disable it since the issue didn't start after enabling it.

7. Sleep has issues as well like i said.

I guess studying behavior might give more hints here. Just look how weird all this is. Here are some observations:

1. Hibernation is working perfectly and as expected upon pressing button or start menu command.

2. Hibernation WAS working perfectly on timer before 19th Dec. Computer put itself into hibernation after 3 hours set in the power plan settings.

3. Hibernation was working with hybrid mode enabled and fast boot enabled. And it still working with all those features but only if I trigger it manually.

4. Sleep mode works correctly on timer under specific conditions: hybrid mode should be disabled, it should be triggered by timer, not manually. In this case the PC will wake up properly.

5. Sleep mode doesn't work correctly under one of the following (or both) conditions: hybrid mode enabled, triggered manually by button or start menu command. Under these conditions PC goes to sleep much faster than it would go to sleep on timer, seems like on timer it does some preparation before completely turning off the power. However, any wake up event (mouse or keyboard) only power up the PC, but not the GPU or Wi-Fi or SSD. So basically i have to do a forced shutdown and then start PC again.

6. Hibernation timer after this issue started actually works but under a specific conditions. I set sleep timer to 1 min, hibernate timer to 2 mins for this test. Since sleep was triggered by timer it was triggered correctly after 1 min. After 1 more minute PC woke up for a few seconds did some stuff probably and went to hibernation itself, also by timer.

So judging upon those observations I found the following issues to persist and waiting for a possible solution:

1. Since Sleep mode works correctly on timer when Hybrid mode is disabled, is there a way to make it also work correctly on button or start menu command? What's the difference between automatic sleep and manual sleep? I don't get it. Cause like i said - in manual (even with hybrid mode disabled), the behavior is the same as if it was enabled - PC just won't wake up properly and completely, only fans and power.

2. Hibernation timer which was working perfectly even with sleep completely disabled prior to 19th Dec is now seems to be working, if it was triggered from the sleep condition. In this case PC will wake up for a moment and then go hibernate. What could possibly cause this timer to fail and how to fix that?

If none of the above suggestions help, sorry but the only other suggestion i have is to try a repair install. You mentioned 12/19. I would look to see if any windows updates or driver updates from windows update have happened since that date.
