Hello!

I know that I can login to my Microsoft account and download my applications and games from Windows Store when on a new computer. In most cases the game progress is transferred too, so I can resume playing from either computer. What about older applications or games no longer available at Windows Store, such as Paint4Kids by Ela & Pietro Lab? I wouldn't want to risk downloading the .appx file from an unreliable source. Is there any tool to backup the applications from my computer into an .appx file (or other format) and then restore/install it to the new computer? I tried this site but apparently gets the files from Microsoft servers, so it cannot find it since is no longer available:

You'll give Microsoft "ideas".
They'll come up with a TwoDrive, to backup OneDrive.
And they'll charge a buck two ninety eight per kilobyte to use it. :D



Seriously... OneDrive is located on "their" servers, so unless OneDrive has an "export" function, I doubt you can back it up. But... it's an interesting thought. :-)

I was talking about applications and games you download from Windows Store, not OneDrive, but anyway, thanks for replying.

Hi there,

If the appx file(s) are no longer available on the store server then it gets complicated.
Some appx packages have dependencies so you'll need to export / get extra appx packages alongside these so this also gets complicated.

It will try to export your installed version in a appx, just as you described.
Note though, this is an old script and I have never tried it myself, to see if it works or not on current systems.

Try Winget command to export the installed apps.

  • Press Start, type cmd, and click on Run as administrator.
  • To export a list of your installed apps, type the following: winget export -o location\file_name.json
    Make sure to replace location with the folder address where you want to export the list, and replace file_name with whatever name you want to give to your file.

Press Enter and wait for Winget to create and export the list in your specified location.


Copy the JSON file to an easily accessible location. Then follow the steps below to import the app list.


  1. On your new computer, open command prompt and type the following: winget import -i location\file_name.json --accept-source-agreements --accept-package-agreements

  • Make sure to replace location with the folder path where you’ve saved the JSON file, and replace file_name with the name of your file.
  • And wait for the packages to be installed.

I cannot tell for sure, but I think winget gets the applications from Microsoft servers. For those that have been removed from their servers it won't be able to get them and display an error message. That is why I need to get it from my own computer somehow. I know there are utilities for Android to backup your games to an .apk file which you can run on another device and install the game. Is there anything similar to backup a UWP application back into an .appx file or other format so you can install offline to another computer? Assuming I copy the whole folder from C:\Program Files\WindowsApps and I paste it to the respective folder in the new computer. How can I make the application work? Is copy-paste enough? Probably not.

I know about the first link, it allows you to download Windows apps and games without using the store. It doesn't work for applications removed from the Store because it gets the files from Microsoft servers.
What the second link is about? I don't want to make shortcuts of the applications, I want to move to a difference computer.

Million thanks! Now I can install it on my son's computer so he stops using mine. If I need anything else I will post again. The weird thing is that the site could retrieve the data from Microsoft servers, but when I tried the URL at the browser there was a message that I either mistyped the URL or is not available anymore. Probably the links are still valid but disabled. Why? Does the Developer has to pay loyalties to Microsoft and he didn't pay? Anyway, thanks again, I will mark it solved.

Publishers can remove apps from the Store App or website, to prevent new users from finding it. But MS will keep the packages hidden on the WU back-end. Tools like rg-adguard.net use an undocumented API to find them.

For example, HP's Support Assistant is nowhere to be found on the Store. HP wants you to use their own app installer, but expects WU to silently update the package once it's on your PC.

You don't. Strip the app's version & architecture from your folder's name, to get a Package Family Name (PFN).
