All computers have been restored back to Windows 11 23H2 last week. I did NOT want 24h2 to install.

I found all the computers today with Windows 11 24H2 installed. I thought 24H2 would not install with Get the latest updates as soon as they're available turned off.

I agree there. This 24H2 upgrade craps is costing me money and lots of time. I even had 24H2 blocked in Group Policy and Registry. What a great surprise to come home to when you need to get work completed and cannot do so.

So glad that I have moved most of my important projects over to ArchLinux system and MacBook Air. This is really making me think about dumping Windows for a primary OS. I cannot completely get rid of it because of my career. But personally, I do not need this crap OS.

Windows 11 24H2 is the best marketing for Linux and macOS switchers.

Why not dump your Windows for Windows x-lite?
No updates ever, and all of the bloatware removed, if you want.
I've been using it for a couple of years now and never any windows issues.
There are a few forum members here that also use it, including me.
It's funny reading all of these issues and knowing none of these effect me.

never had 1 update install by itself. not defender, not a driver, nothing

View attachment 119690

I think I found the cause of the automatic installation of 24H2.

I found several posts elsewhere that Windows 11 users stating that various registry modifications (aka tweaks) are getting removed each time Microsoft sends updates out (nothing new there). Since Microsoft is now resetting all these registry tweaks back to "default" values/settings, Windows Update may be automatically installing updates. The GatedBlockId shows "None" in the registry and it has for the past week or so. Something changed somewhere and 24H2 installed.

After checking everything on these 24H2 systems, strangely the printers and scanners are working for now. The only reason I did not want 24H2 to install is that it broke the scanning and network share locks (network shares need to re-authenticate and re-connect).

I didn't have WindowsUpdate in that location.
I had to create everything by hand. Is that normal not to have it there?

Yeah... there are many instances where keys and values need to be created in the registry.

There are very many different ways our registries get to be in whatever state they are in.
Different hardware, software, tweakers, etc., all contribute to the current state of the registry.

Many of the tutorials here and on the web, will instruct you to "create the key if necessary".
So... you did good. :-)

For example... here's the registry tweak to "disable driver updates included with Windows updates".
Which is a very useful tweak...

I had to create the "key" and the "Name" for this tweak...

Keys are on the left side, and Names are on the right side.

Really, the only things in the registry, that are guaranteed to be on everyone's Windows system, are the five
Hive Keys (HKEY).

This is different, but late, and might have been the missing part that would have stopped the auto update.

Thank you.

Here's an updated batch script that, in addition to letting Windows Update notify you before downloading and automatically installing new updates, will prevent Windows Update from forcing the download and automatic installation within one week after the notification.
Code:
@echo off
echo Configuring Windows Update to notify before download and installation...

:: Set Windows Update settings to notify before download and install
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v AUOptions /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f

:: Set ScheduledInstallEveryWeek to 0 to prevent forced installation
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v ScheduledInstallEveryWeek /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

:: Confirm the changes
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v AUOptions
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v ScheduledInstallEveryWeek

echo Done.

I may be fooled or just not encountered any weirdness after 24H2 installed, but my laptop is working okay. While not paying attention 24H2 installed on two of my Win-11 Dell laptops and both seem to run okay. Have I witnessed a true miracle?

Also note, Setting ScheduledInstallEveryWeek to 0 doesn't automatically defer updates. Instead, it removes the weekly forced installation schedule, allowing more flexibility in how updates are applied. For more granular control over deferring updates, you should use the example batch script below. In this example, feature update deferral is set to 30 days and quality update deferral is set to 15 days. You could always decide to merge the two batch scripts into one and adjust the settings to make it suit your needs. On Windows 11 Pro, you can defer feature updates for up to 365 days and quality updates for up to 30 days. (On Windows 11 Home, these two settings are ignored.)
Code:
@echo off
echo Configuring Windows Update deferral periods...

:: Set Feature Update deferral to 30 days
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v DeferFeatureUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 30 /f

:: Set Quality Update deferral to 15 days
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v DeferQualityUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 15 /f

:: Confirm the changes
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v DeferFeatureUpdates
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v DeferQualityUpdates

echo Done.
pause
  • Additionally, on Windows 11 Pro you can pause updates for up to 35 days, and, TargetReleaseVersion allows you to specify which feature update version you want to receive, giving you more control over when updates are applied. E.g.:
Code:
@echo off
echo Setting TargetReleaseVersion to 22H2...

:: Set TargetReleaseVersion to 23H2
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /v TargetReleaseVersion /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /v TargetReleaseVersionInfo /t REG_SZ /d "23H2" /f

echo Done.

That was my screen shot from the other day showing Windows 11 24H2 available, but not installed.

Today, all computers updated to Windows 11 24H2. I did not select 24H2 to install.
Ahhh gotcha my apologies! Just got a little misled with the picture my bad! Ive set mine to pause updates for the next month, i just keep adding time to it every few weeks nd it hasn't installed a single thing

I have been running 24H2 on both laptops since early October. I witnessed only a few minor hiccups that either were an easy fix or have had no real impact of any kind. Now we just need to wait for them to wake the hell up and fix the EDRSandBlast-GodFault vulnerability already. lol
