Solved How to add exclusions to cookie deletions


It’s messy, probably the way I explained it. There’s kind of a catch 22 involved with cookies, browser whitelisting and CCleaner.

You don't "delete" cookies in CCleaner.
You tell CCleaner which cookies you want to "keep". like for sites like Eleven Forum.

THEN when you run CCleaner's, "Custom_Clean".... CCleaner "removes" all the cookies you didn't tell it to "save".


Here's a little guide I wrote, (a while back), showing how I use CCleaner...

My CCleaner Tweaks...

I use CCleaner 5.78 I installed it offline, and I blocked it and it's updaters in MY firewall. And... since it was purchased by Avast, I also "added" these lines to my HOSTS file (which "blocks" them)... C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS...

This has been my experience also, with Firefox. Hence not letting CCleaner delete ANY cookies from its cleaning process and hence the cookie manager.

In my experience, the save cookie feature in CCleaner is crap. Doesn’t always work and cookies that I have added to save for specific sites that save login info for those sites are often removed.

Others may have different experiences. But this is why I unchecked the cookie cleaning in CCleaner settings.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More IMG_5098.png > Settings.
  3. Click Privacy and security > Third-party cookies...
  4. Next to "Allowed to use third party cookies," click Add.
  5. Enter the web address.
    • To create an exception for an entire domain, insert [*.] before the domain name. For example, [*.]google.com will match drive.google.com and calendar.google.com.
    • You can also put an IP address or a web address that doesn't start with http://.
  6. Select Add.
To remove an exception you don't want any more, to the right of the website, click Remove

BTW, CCleaner can delete cookies across all your browsers in one go, not just Chrome, Edge, or (in my case) Firefox. OK -how???

You don't need to delete cookies in ANY browsers, if you use CCleaner.
It "deletes" ALL the cookies in all your browsers at the same time, except the cookies you tell it to "save".

So if you use CCleaner to deal with cookies, you shouldn't "clean" the cookies using the browser's tools.
Even if you told CCleaner to "save" certain cookies, the cookie cleaner in a browser won't follow CCleaner's rules.

If you use CCleaner... just don't use the individual browser's cookie cleaner.

There's a little "trick" to using CCleaner's cookie tool.

When you run Custom_Clean... CCleaner removes ALL the cookies you don't tell it to "save". From all the different browsers.

Telling CCleaner which cookies to save is a bit more complicated, than it seems.

1. IF you use CCleaner's cookies tool... do NOT use the cookies tools in the various browsers.
2. Take a site like Eleven Forum... it has many more cookies than just elevenforum.com and www.elevenforum.com
3. So, if you want to "save" the Eleven Forum cookies in CCleaner, you need to do it like this...

3a. First, close all browsers, then run CCleaner's "Custom_Clean" tool.
3b. The "Custom_Clean" tool, will delete all the cookies on the left side of the cookie tool.
3c. Now, open your browser and go to ElevenForum.com... ONLY.
3d. Now when you open CCleaner, you'll see ALL of eleven forum's cookies on the left side.
3e. So.... you need to move ALL those cookies to the right side.
3f. Now, when you run Custom_Clean... it will ignore ALL eleven forum's cookies.

Once you get the hang of it... it's really simple.
There's only about 7 or 8 sites where I allow the cookies to remain, so it doesn't take that long to set up, CCleaner.



For example... in the past, I haven't "saved" any of AnAndTech's cookies in CCleaner.
BRB and I'll show you how many cookies that site actually has...


Ok, here's what I did...

1. I closed the browser (Firefox), and ran CCleaner's "Custom Clean" until it said "0 bytes removed".
1a. This will remove ALL the cookies on the left side... those that I haven't previously "saved" in CCleaner.
2. Then, I opened the browser and went directly to this site... nowhere else.
2a. My broswer is set to "open" to the Google search page, so there are a very few Google cookies in there too.

3. Then I re-opened CCleaner and went to the cookies tool... this is what I saw...

4. So... if I want to "save" the cookies for AnAndTech, I need to move ALL these cookies to the right side.
5. Now, when I run CCleaner's "Custom_Clean", it knows to "save" the AnAndTech cookies.

Cheers Ghot, not to sound ungrateful, but after using CCleaner for many years, it’s more hit and miss for me. Hence adding a cookie manager to Firefox. I don’t have Firefox set to clean anything. But t occasionally I set it to clean istory on exit, but bvery rarely.

It’s why I use this now

CCleaner has been dead-on accurate for me.

Me... I hate browser extensions (add-ons), they just seem to slow the browser down.
And... they occasionally cause conflicts with new browser versions.

I used to use the add-on... "NoScript". For years it worked fine. Then one day... bam!
A Firefox update broke NoScript. :-)



I even had to break out in some Gloria Gaynor...

I was going to test some of your theories/settings. I installed Google Chrome and right off the bat it says “Managed by your organisation” lol
I’ve never used it and I have no policy issues with windows, except apparently for Chrome.
It’s obviously been reading my hate mail.

I hate Google so much

I have the feeling that "your organization" might be EDGE. LOL

After the 24H2 upgrade, I noticed that EDGE grabbed all the file associations, once again.
So... I got out my ugly stick...
Now all is back to normal and Firefox is 'large and in charge'. :D

You might be right. Edge is also managed by an organisation but I am aware of why (winareo tweaks for Edge)

So I wonder if Chrome inherits those?

So I did a test

I installed Chrome.
I went to Microsoft and logged into an account.
I selected remember me

I closed chrome (cookies/history not set to be automatically removed)

I opened CCleaner and I added the only cookies I had, Microsoft, to the save panel
(I previously removed all saved cookies for this test pre installing chrome)

Microsoft had booted me and made me log in again, 3 minutes after login in and asking to remember me.

Follow these steps exactly. Substitute whatever site you want, for ElevenForum.com in step 3c.


3a. First, close all browsers, then run CCleaner's "Custom_Clean" tool.
3b. The "Custom_Clean" tool, will delete all the cookies on the left side of the cookie tool.
3c. Now, open your browser and go to ElevenForum.com... ONLY.
3d. Now when you open CCleaner, you'll see ALL of eleven forum's cookies on the left side.
3e. So.... you need to move ALL those cookies to the right side.
3f. Now, when you run Custom_Clean... it will ignore ALL eleven forum's cookies.



NOTE: For sites that require sign-ins... sign in between 3c and 3d.

This works for all normal sites. Who knows with a Microsoft account. :/

Also, something worth noting. If a website dictates the life of a session, for like a month, then I’m pretty sure that session in the cookies will only last for a month regardless that it may be protected.
Some websites may set cookies never to live longer than a single log in session, like some banks.
