Solved How to make sure I have the correct Windows 10 Key before starting W11 Upgrade

Howdy Folks,
While reviewing (memorizing) the Windows 11 Installation Assistant I see I must have my Windows 10 Key. I have one - 25 characters - from running Belac Advisor. And using an elevated command prompt "slmgr /dli" I received the same last 5 characters as the one from Belac.
However a CMD "wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey" returns nothing.

I'm concerned I may have the manufacturer's Key and not mine. Additionally, as I replace the Motherboard in 2021, should I worry whether that could be an issue as well.

WMI is only going to display the key if you have a firmware-embedded activation key. If the output is blank, the device doesn't have a firmware embedded activation key.

Yes, replacing the motherboard does make a new computer of it and can be an issue with Activation.

I tried the command just now and got the same key that was on the computer 2 years ago. I got the Desktop a year earlier.
OA3xOriginalProductKey
G4xxx-NRxxx-V3xxx-42xxx-CRxxx
I copied the command, opened Command Prompt and pasted it in at the prompt then added >originalkey.txt to it, got the file in C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE then opened it in Notepad.

If those 5 characters are 3V66T then it's the generic Windows 10/11 Pro key and your PC is activated with a digital licence stored on Microsoft's activation servers.

If so then you can just upgrade from 10 to 11 and it will remain activated from the existing digital licence, it's valid for both w10 and W11.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Win11 will do most everything Win10 does and most commands used in the Command Prompt should work, a number of the old DOS commands don't. PowerShell/Terminal is a different thing.

Is this the correct command with your "add-on"?
C:\WINDOWS\system32>wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey>originalkey.txt
It gives me no return ... unless it should go directly to: C:\Users\username, however I don't see it there.

2nd Question: Can I just find it somewhere in the Registry? That might be an easy solution (with the new Motherboard issue.)

Then that is a proper key, not a generic one. Make a note of it.

That's the generic Pro key for both Windows 10 and 11. A PC with the generic key installed will only activate if the PC has an existing digital licence. In W10 look in Settings > Windows Update > Activation to check that it does.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Before I changed my mobo and cpu I ran Produkey. magical jellybean also does it. wmic did not. It did not ask for the key after the upgrade but that was likely because it is a retail key.

To trigger the upgrade from Windows Home to Pro I changed the key to the Generic Windows Pro one. The upgrade then started. Note that the resulting Windows Pro will not be activated. To activate it I had to change the key to the one that I had purchased.
