How to mute something permanently (as in after rebooting)

No, that's unticked. So when you press the windows key, your mouse cursor stays where it is? For me it moves to the bottom centre of the screen.

It's doing it for me. I uninstalled both 7++ taskbar tweaker, and startallback, and rebooted. Now it moves the cursor to the middle of the start menu instead, almost as annoying. So something else is moving it. I have no special mouse software etc, so it has to be windows.

I've also noticed the mouse cursor moving to a program when I'm working in another one. You probably won't notice this happen if you don't have multiple monitors.

I am quite certain it is one of those apps you uninstalled that has caused this. Don't play with dangerous toys.

"Don't play with dangerous toys"? What?! You want me to use the Windows 11 interface as is? It's absurdly rubbish. The start menu and taskbar have been made totally unusable, all the features and customization have gone.

It does not matter what I want. It was just a friendly warning. I use Windows 11 pretty much vanilla, except for adjusting things to my liking...the rest I just adapt and live with.
Windows 11 is fine as is. If one does not like it, then there is always Windows 10 and Linux, which the latter lets you customize everything to the last bit. :wink:

Windows 10 is not an option, it's outdated. Linux is not an option, it's security conscious nonsense makes everything longwinded.

So back to the Windows 11 start menu. Lets say I want to open Word. I don't even know how to do that efficiently in the new start menu. I click the start button and am presented with 30 adverts for games I don't want, and 6, just 6 "recommendations" which are a clumsy mixture of documents I've just opened and will probably open only once, and a couple of programs. But no Word. So I guess I have to use "all apps". Then go all the way down to W to find Word. You cannot seriously tell me that's easier than what I do with Startallback, and what I used to do in Windows 7 (yes that's the last one with a working start menu). I just click the start button, then Word, which is near the top if I use it often, or maybe further down if I don't. But it's two clicks. Windows 11 is broken. It is totally and utterly unusable without 3rd party software. The absolute moron they put in charge of the interface has destroyed the world's best operating system. They had it perfect, they added nonsense nobody ever uses, and took everything away which had any use.

Yeah, I typed stuff in DOS. With a GUI there should be just clicks. I can open Word with one hand and two clicks. You have to press 6 keys, that's 3 times less efficient. And it isn't predictable, you might end up opening wordpad. There are millions of people using these 3rd party programs. You're the first I've ever come across who actually prefers the nonsense MS came up with. Do you work for them by any chance?

Why adapt to something inferior which takes 5 times longer to use? If you used to have a decent car, and bought an inferior one, you'd upgrade it to work like the old one. If you used to live in a big house and moved to a small one, you'd build an extension. Making do is the sign of a weak mind.

It's not faster to click the start button, type word, then press enter. It's quicker to click the start button then click word. I've replaced W O R D ENTER with CLICK. I've dropped 4 interactions.

Same here. The start button is for starting things. I don't need to see the contents when I'm not starting something. Those icons do not belong on the desktop (some stupid Mac invention) or the taskbar.

But what you need is some wallpaper. Oops, my current 5 wallpapers (yes I have 5 monitors each with it's own random wallpaper changing every 10 minutes) are rude. I bet the admins in here are prudes. Amazing how many people still think they live in the deep south full of religion and an aversion to nipples.

You know you can just pin the apps you use the most in the start window. Unless you don't like doing that? I resorted to using a 3rd party app called Start11 because I also find Win 11 start menu and task bar limiting. I only use my Windows now as my gaming rig. I'm daily driving a mac mini M2 as my main general computer. Switch between OS's is only seamless after I had to fiddle with MacOS to mirror how I used Windows. My most frequently used I pin to the taskbar. But I see you don't like that. I agree some of the decisions MS made to the UI for WIn11 is like "why?" o_0. Like at work I use edit from right click menu a lot. And now it's buried another level in the context menu.

I have 17 most recently used apps in my start menu. It's automatic. Why would I want to be constantly adding subtracting and rearranging stuff? This way it works out all by itself what I use the most. It would be like deliberately buying a car with a manual gearbox.

I don't have that issue. I pinned the ones I use and that's that. It doesn't fluctuate once it's set. I rarely add new applications that often. I actually disable the recently used/viewed file/app. I found that feature clutters things to me. But if that works for you.
I'm not constantly rearranging anything once it's set. I pin in order of importance or use case.

Used Daily Pinned to taskbar
Used sparingly pinned to start menu
Rarely used I'll leave it in default apps location

I've got 17 in most recently used. They're all used pretty regularly, to varying degrees, which is automatically placed higher or lower in the list. I doubt anyone never changes how often they use things, so stuff can creep up or down as things change. I would not have enjoyed spending time arranging things, then later on deciding that wasn't where I wanted them etc. I certainly wouldn't want them in 3 seperate places. What about an app which is kinda often used, and you're not sure if you put it on the taskbar or in the start menu? Where do you draw the line? Can you remember exactly where you drew that line?

For me I don't think I use that many apps in any given session. I usually have Brave Browser in 3 different profiles. Password manager. But now that I've relegated my WIndows system to just gaming I don't have a bunch of apps I use at any given time. Most of the apps start with windows and run in the background. Like Logitech, Razer software, etc. So basically what I have pinned for immediate use is just browser, snapshot, calendar, outlook. When gaming I only need NVIDIA game launcher and then that just launches Steam or other Game launcher. So in my case I'm not using a large number of apps in the foreground. But similar layout I've applied to my Mac Usage since that's now my general computer usage. And in Mac everything I need immediately is just docked in the Dock. And other apps are just one swipe away to click.
