HP printer problem from windows - Error status?

My local networked HP (LaserJet Pro 3001dw) laser printer is great, but recently the windows print system fails for it, saying it is in Error status.

The “HP-Smart” tool and “HP Print and Scan Doctor” tools work fine and can print reports, see the printer, etc. and think all is well, so I don't think it is the printer. HP support was worthless.

Windows printer diagnostics don't help or find anything.

If I reboot windows, it would work fine for a few days, although now after more Windows updates it fails almost immediately.

If I remove and reinstall the printer, is looks good, and can print a test-page, but windows programs cannot print to it – they fail “Error” and print jobs just accumulate in the print queue.

HP-Smart diagnostic and utility tool connects fine to the printer, and says “Printer Ready”, and can print all reports to it fine, and it reports all tests and access pass. Only printing from windows fails. I also ran the HP EasyStart to reinstall the printer, in case any drivers needed updating - no change.

have you tried removing the HP printer drivers completely from the system and setting the printer up just with the Windows default printer drivers.
i dont have a HP network printer i have a Brother network printer and they only way to get it to fully function was to use the Windows default drivers but install the Brother 'iPrint and Scan' software which doesn’t need the Brother printer drivers to work but was needed to use the scanner.

i also have my printer set up with a static IP address as i have found Windows can miss the printer using DHCP.
just a few thoughts on the matter and i hope they maybe of help.
best of luck, Steve ..

Thanks, I can try this - although it worked fine for about a year, and only recently has it faltered. It does not have any issue with network addressability, all the tools seem to find it.

I can run the HP Print and scan doctor" and it will then work, and windows can print a test page, and even a few other windows programs can print. Then after some time, it goes into Errror mode and fails again...

HP has an ink/toner feature of subscription, if that doesn't get renewed there will be an error. Usually an E-Mail will be received about it.

Hmm, I have never had that subscription so no renewals - and the intermittent nature of the failures would now seem to be from that.
Thanks.

I think I have tracked it down to a specific tool, Snagit - a clipping and screenshot tool (really great!).
The printer will work fine and can print from any app, but once I try to use this tool and tell it to print the captured image to the printer, it fails and the printer goes into the Error state. It is then disabled for any other usages until I either reboot or use the "HP printer and scan Doctor", which will fix the broken printer device connection.
Somehow it seems to be incompatible with some fairly recent windows updates.
