The way Dell explained it to me (though some of their words weren't small enough for me to understand) is that I can add an optane module and then, through the Optane management app, pair that module with a HDD thereby boosting the HDD performance to SSD like speeds. It steps in to allow users to run large capacity HDDs at this ssd speed (which are cheaper than large capacity m.2 drives)
