Internet Provider Question

Update:

I'm a computer tech, but as crazy as it may sound, "I don't do cell phones". My feelings about Cell Phones is somewhere between hatred and loathing. But it seems like they have become a necessary evil.
I set up my Star Link myself, in a most generic manner, just pointing the antenna at the NE sky and hoping for the best. I did get on line and the system seemed to work, all without the Star Link Cell Phone app.
But I realized I was missing something, so yesterday I went to a local Phone Store and asked if "she" would install the Star Link app on my phone for me. She did, free of charge, and I couldn't wait to get home and try it out.

The end result was that the app allowed me to perfectly align my antenna with the best satellite signal. I was 24 degrees off toward the East.
By the time I got the antenna turned to the perfect orientation, it was pointed almost due North. So now, I have a stronger signal and hopefully fewer drop outs, even in bad weather. It's summer here in Florida, and bad weather is an every day occurrence.

And, an update to the VOIP saga: I finally got a hold of a sweet little gal at Magic Jack, that helped me get my device activated and all set up, and working. They will also import my old phone number into Magic Jack, and in the mean time I have a temporary phone number.

I so want to call Hughes.Net and tell them to CLOSE my account, but I have to wait, till the import of my phone number to Magic Jack is complete.
That can't be soon enough for me.

Bottom Line:
My new Star Link system and my VOIP are working great together and all's well in mudville.
And, they are both on my UPS, so even in the event of Line Power failure, I'll still be ON-LINE.

I want to thank y'all for your participation in this thread.

Cheers Mates!

As Musk's satellites are everwhere I think anyone in the southern hemisphere could just point the dish north and vice versa. My 'target' and actual orientation is ~165 degrees but I think that is because the house would block part of the view if I pointed it due south. What does your obstruction map look like?

It appears to be Elon's aim is to Cover the World with Star Link internet availability. That's a good thing!
But right now, his satellites seem to be mostly arranged across the Northern sky.

Here I am, in Central Florida, USA, and I have to point my Star Link antenna almost due North to get the best alignment, according to the Star Link app. (on my Cell Phone).

My Kit came with what appears to be 75' of CAT-5 Ethernet cable for an Antenna Cable. But then, the antenna itself is not your average communications antenna. So I've experimented with adding more CAT-5 cable to the Star Link antenna cable, and that seems to work.
Right now, my SL antenna is on the East side of my house, pointed North, and the obstruction map is showing my house to be an obstruction, on the West side. To get the full 110 degree VIEW, of the sky, I'll need to move my antenna around to the North side of my house, and I may need to extend my antenna wire. But so far, my experimentation has proven that adding more CAT-5 cable will be no problem. The system still works!

On the VOIP phone service,,, I've now got my Magic Jack working 100% with the import of my old phone number.
And yesterday, I called Hughes.Net and told them to cancel my account. They will be sending me a box, in which to return their modem and VOIP box, and the associated power supplies. And a pre-paid return label. Thus endeth my association with Hughes.Net.

Cheers Mates!

Astronomers are not happy with Starlinks RF pollution

"SpaceX's new Starlink satellites produce 32 times more radio noise than their predecessors, causing concerns among astronomers about their interference with radio astronomy observations."

Radio pollution from SpaceX's new Starlink satellites poses threat to astronomy, scientists say
What they call 'noise' is internet traffic to me! They should use more temperate language to make their point. I never trust any news stories that refer to 'scientists'. Do they mean physicists, physiciancs, chemists, metallurgists, biologists, zoologists........ I've never met anyone who claims to be a scientist.

It's not just radio noise. Optical telescopes sometime have satellites cross crossing the telescopes view while taking pictures. Since the exposures sometimes takes minutes or longer there might a number of satellites crossing the field of view during the exposure.

SpaceX with its Starlink with their thousand of satellites is just the beginning. In the next decade it will be joined by other competing companies who will also have their own thousands of satellites.

People need to accept the fact that the only way to get low latency and reasonably fast internet speeds is to use satellites in low orbits. The old generation satellites in geosynchronous orbits just don't cut it. Also, the new generation of Starlink satellites is experimenting with cell-to-satellite service. SpaceX is partnering with T-Mobile for this. When this is fully operational people with ordinary cell phones with T-Mobile service will be able to make calls though the Starlink satellites. Many people with no or marginal cell service will benefit from this.

BTW, before I retired I worked in a support role for a NASA contractor. I was involved in a lot of space related scientific research. I am not happy about the repercussions of both optical and radio interference that is and will continue to happen. However, I also accept the reality that more and more cutting edge observations of space objects will have to move off earth where there is less interference. For example, there has been plans to do astronomy on the back side of the moon for decades.

I'm glad to hear that @TechnoMage2021 is happy with the performance of his satellite internet. Where I live for high speed internet my only option is Comcast or satellite. I am getting tired of the ridiculously high prices that Comcast charges. I have been seriously thinking about dropping the TV cable and just keeping the internet and the VOIP. The only reason I haven't is because my wife will be very upset if she loses her cable only channels. Now that I know that I'm not locked into being dependent on Comcast and I have a choice, I have to give it some serious thought.

Edit: Where I live I was always getting very good TV reception from Maryland and Pennsylvania. It was so so reception from New York.

I understand your dilemma. I have a choice of 2 cable providers (Comcast & WoW) and 2 fiber providers (AT&T Fiber & Google Fiber). I have had Comcast for 23 years. I would have switched to fiber years ago if it wasn't for my wife insisting on keeping traditional TV with Comcast. They fiber providers even made it more difficult a few years ago by dropping a regular TV option and only offering streaming. I like my current Internet plan (2000/300Mbps) but my bill keeps going up every years. BTW, I don't even have anything that is faster then 1000Mbs so can't even take advantage of the full speed I have.

@TechnoMage2021. Starlink is working with T-Mobile to eventually allow people with cell phones to make calls through the Starlink satellites. If you ever get a cell phone you're all set. The only catch is you will need a T-Mobile plan.

I've found this thread really interesting. I did look at getting Starlink myself as there was no full fibre provider in my area and I'd been stuck for years on a very long FTTC line to my house with very (and I mean very) slow speeds. For years I had messed about with satellite dishes for TV reception so thought it couldn't be that difficult to set up.

For 4-5 years I had my name down with a local company called Lightning Fibre and despite numerous empty promises, they never did reach my street. Still haven't.

I was at the point of buying Starlink when out of the blue a friend said just for fun he had put my postal (zip) code into a checker of the company he had signed up with called Trooli and it claimed full fibre was available to my property. I signed up and within a week I was online on their 900mbps package. It's been flawless since day one.

The Star Link Kit, that I bought at "Best Buy" came with 75' of antenna cable. Examining that cable, it looked remarkably like Cat-5 or maybe Cat-6 Ethernet Cable. It's not marked.
But a little experimenting, convinced me that some CAT-5e could be successfully used as an extension for the OEM Antenna Cable.
So, to get my Star Link Antenna around to the North side of my home, for best view of the SL satellites, I concluded that I'd need to extend my antenna cable by about 25'.
Looking through my various lengths of CAT-5e cable, I found the 25' length that I needed, and with an in-line Butt Connector, I added that 25' of cable to the modem end of the antenna cable. Then I was able to move my SL antenna around to the North side of my house. Reception is improved and the obstructions are almost non existent.

So if anything should happen to my antenna cable, I know I can replace it with the 100' of CAT-5e that I have on hand.
Or, I could always order a 100' length of cable from the Star Link store.

Using the WiFi option on my Cell Phone, I can make Cell Phone calls through Star Link, from within my house, where I get NO Cell Service at all.
That's one HUGE advantage.

My Star Link Modem and my Magic Jack both draw power from a UPS in times of line power failure. For long term outages, I can always fire up my Generator, flip a couple of Circuit Breakers and be on Backup Power for my whole house.

Cheers Mates!
