i use AVG Free then AVG Internet Security Suite as that was about long before Windows defender but i have Windows defender running in the background as backup which is the way i have installed and used it this way on two home systems.
as of VPN's i look at it this way .. would you trust a complete stranger to look after your wallet as all your data passes through the VPN.
you will have to decide the answer to that yourself.
