Solved Issues replacing Optane ssd with nvme

One of the very first commands I run after a clean install of Windows is:
powercfg -h off

That turns off hibernation, removes the hiberfil.sys file, and since hibernation is disabled, it will also turn off Windows fast startup.

Is there an entry or "Switch" in the HP Bios that related to the Type of Boot drive?

The use of Optane Memory will usually need the bios to have a setting switched on to run.

If the Optane chip in the hybrid H10 drive is used in the same configuration as when Optane is used as a separate buffer device for a conventional HDD or SSD then this "switch " will need setting to Off in the Bios before the conventional SSD/NVME is used to boot the system
If the H10 works as a standard HDD or SSD then this would not be an issue (and the "switch" may not even exist).

As far as I am aware the RST driver package is only needed for the drive for the Optane memory so again may not be needed at all with the conventional setup

Thanks. I looked in bios again today (and have turned off fast start up now). There is nothing you can change regarding the drives - no right clicking or options. Just details of them. The only thing changeable is the usual thing - like changing boot order etc. The bios seem quite minimal. It does say, on the section that lists the drives (optane and ssd separately shown because optane has been disabled in the app) at the top of that section something about the IRST driver and Raid. But above the listed drives it says non raid. Anyway I assume that when changing the drive and clean installing, hopefully Windows will recognise the drive and install the driver. It's annoying I couldn't just do a system image, or clone even but thinking about it, the image is all on based on the optane install and drivers so may conflict.

I guess it may still mean booting into safe mode as Navy suggested above. Just waiting for the nvme enclosure to arrive. Hope it works!

Comment from Intel was I needed to change from Optane to AHCI in Bios, before installing Windows. But can't see there's a way to change anything in bios. Anyway the safe mode on boot up sounds like a work around. There is no on or off in bios.

This doesn't sound positive! Someone with the exact same issues I am having with Optane and HP bios. Instructions were to go to advanced and change settings. Poster says no advanced option in bios (same here). Response is - in that case they've been locked by HP and you can't change them. Suggesting the laptop will only work with an intel optane ssd. Unless booting into safe mode works.

How to Disable Optane in Bios, and set Disk Controller to AHCI mode

So I might have to write to HP and tell them to unlock the bios then! Doubt I'd get much response from that.

No. What I am saying is that as long as you see this in BIOS, you won't be able to do anything:

Thanks. Can you explain how I do this please?

It's a week for incompatibility it seems. The nvme drive enclosure arrived and the Samsung doesn't fit. In small print on the side it says - not for Samsung 970! So another one coming tomorrow (which is clear what drives fit).

Ok - so I think that's what it said when I had the samsung in previously wasn't it. I'll have to wait till tomorrow to try anything now as having to change drive enclosure for a different one.

If I'm not mistaken, when you first installed the NVMe drive it was recognized until you did an image restore to it? If I'm correct when you get the new enclosure format the NVMe drive, then install it in the laptop. If it shows in the BIOS do a clean install. That will eliminate any Optane drivers. If it works and you want to you can restore just the old C partition over the new C partition.

Ah good point yes. After I installed the drive I could boot usb media and install from external drive. It was only after install it wouldn't boot. So maybe a clean install will work.

The RST driver shows in bios. I was thinking earlier - what if I uninstalled the RST driver within Windows - but then realised the system probably wouldn't boot and then I wouldn't be able to install anything or use current drive with Windows on.

I am not happy with Intel and HP right now! It's a conspiracy! One thing it doesn't tell you in specs is whether the manufacturer has locked the bios!

What is on the SSD - or not on the SSD - in regard to software, will have no effect on whether it is recognized by the BIOS as being physically installed or not - I think that is a major fact that many are ignoring or not aware of.

I wouldn't make any changes to your Optane/NVme drive. You might wind up losing everything.

I'm trying to be positive about the drive not being the problem. The drive did work when first installed so when she gets the replacement enclosure we will know for sure if the drive is defective or not.

Exactly. I decided it was a bad idea. If the worst comes to the worst I'll have to buy another Optane Drive in 1tb. I am also hoping a clean install will work. It will almost certainly install. Whether it will boot again is another matter. As others have said - the drive needs to be recognised by the bios for it to boot. Interestingly I came across an ubuntu thread about this issue as if it's locked to IRST then it won't install Ubuntu apparently. Bios had no option to switch to AHCI. An intel official replied to my query and said - contact HP! As expected. No point doing that as they'll know I've invalidated my warranty then by taking it apart! And I can't see them unlocking the bios.

I'm still missing something here. You do not have a SATA drive connected. You only have an NVMe drive connected. AHCI applies ONLY to SATA! It is completely impossible to run an NVMe drive in AHCI mode. If you install a SATA drive, then, and only then, AHCI may become a factor.

You can run a SATA drive in IDE, AHCI or RAID mode. You can run NVMe in standard NVMe, Intel VMD, or RAID mode. You cannot run an NVMe drive in AHCI mode - it is completely impossible to do.

There is so much talk in this thread that is just impossible. Changing the software/drivers that are loaded onto the SSD will not effect whether the BIOS/UEFI firmware detects the SSD or not. You cannot enable AHCI mode for an NVMe SSD. The mode that you select for the NVMe SSD in BIOS (UEFI firmware) only determines the driver that Windows (or Linux) will need to access the SSD - whether Windows (or Linux) will need the standard NVMe driver (built-in to Windows), or the Intel IRST VMD driver, or the Intel IRST RAID driver. But AHCI will never work with an NVMe SSD.
