Yeh for sure man, Some all in one's too i guess! You can technically custom build laptops too and by custom i mean as custom as a laptop will get, It will cost you a leg or so more though and im gonna say is the reason its so niche lol

For people who don't like to assemble their own computers, they can still choose their own parts.
There are plenty of computer part suppliers (especially the bigger ones) that offer to assemble it for you at a small price if you purchase all the parts from them.

Even though I like to assemble them myself, there is a positive side to getting the parts supplier to assemble it for you. If you are unlucky enough to get a faulty part, then the supplier can easily swap the faulty part over, whereas you don't have additional stock on hand and have to deal with the supplier and convince them you have a faulty part. It's happened to me before.

When i said deal directly i mean for things like drivers or support etc if theres a problem, I use Scan a lot here in the UK, I wouldnt be against somewhere like Computer Planet or Overclockers(Other than they're overpriced stuff :O) building something for me if i specc'ed it.
Either or they aren't like Dell, Hp, Lenovo etc etc. I'd still considering something custom built if you gave the company the spec sheet and got em to do it, That is also custom to me.

The good thing with my Alienware was it was built to my specs with which components I wanted ( a bit limited range ) choice of ram size and speed, graphic card make and model same with processor, OS wifi cards etc. so it's what I want without the fuss

@glasskuter I think that is normal, as @Graulges said. It is not the speed of the ram it is the bus for the new 2 slots. Have you got or can you download the online manual? On mine it tells you the relevant speeds per configuration. I actually phoned Crucial and the lady explained it to me. and basically the speed of the ram is the maximum achievable, and the other factors with the motherboard slow it down

If by custom, you mean, have the vendor upgrade parts before sale, yeah, I did that with my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga X1 laptop. I ordered direct from Lenovo, and had them max out the specs. And yeah, it was an expense.

Thought I would give everyone an update on this mess of a PC. I'm not one to let something drop when I feel I'm right about something. After a lengthy and scathing letter was sent to the office of Dell's president, I finally got someone to pay attention to me. Almost immediately I was contacted by the head of quality control. They did not have a test PC in their labs like mine so for weeks we worked together, another motherboard change (my third one), them shipping me different rams to test with, way to much happened for me to list here.

The conclusion was, this particular mobo has to have exact same ram of exact same size by exact same manufacturer in all 4 slots to maintain speed of 2933. Dell had never seen this happen and admitted it. We tried it with various Dell Micron and Hynix memory pairs. I ended up with 4 8gb Micron sticks of same lot, but those pairs would not reach full speed with the original 2 Micron sticks.

I asked the hypothetical question "What if I want to add memory in the future?" Answer: All 4 stick will have to be changed to larger capacity.
I asked a second hypothetical question "We've proven even Micron won't mix with Micron of different lots. What if one of the sticks go bad at some point."
Answer: All 4 sticks will have to be changed and you will have to purchase from Dell to make sure they come from same manufacturer's lot".

Is that not the craziest thing you hardware guys have ever heard of?

Anyway, to anyone who gets the runaround from Dell, document your tracks, and take it to the top if you want anything done.

That's impressive persistence.

A couple of days ago, I spent hours on the phone with Dell support, trying to get a new monitor set up (on a non-Dell system). I called multiple times, hoping to find someone who was familiar with the product, or to be referred to a higher level of support. That's a strategy that has worked for me with other companies, in the past. Didn't work this time. In particular, I wanted to download the "drivers" for the monitor (a .inf file plus an .icm), but the link at the Dell support page for it served up the wrong file. (The link was to an SDK, which did not include the drivers.) None of the "techs" I reported that to offered any suggestions about that, even though I think that one or two believed me. I eventually found a file (On a Dell web site) by additional Web searching.

The good news if I didn't suffer apoplexy then, I may not do so soon.

I avoid trying to get tech support, but Dell's may be the worst I have encountered. It appears to be entirely outsourced. As is their phone sales.

No it's not unusual
Many people buy 2x?gb and add another 2x?gb later or start out with 2-2x?gb kits most popular is 3200c16 2 kits 2x8gb

It's just asking for trouble on dual channel boards and especially on quad channel boards

But most the issue is the high cl # these are typically really low end memory, an example is at 3000 you'd be lucky if cl15 worked well
CL# higher than that it's just nothing you'd want latency is way to high anyway.

Yes, and you can't understand one of them, but it's just as well because you can get out of them is canned responses. Their upper level support is still in Texas and they are all Americans. The problem is no matter what your issue, you can never get to them. After so much headache for so long dealing with so many various issues, I took the chance and started from the top down.

I had little difficulty with the South Asian accents, although one or two of them were harder to understand than the others.

My main complaint is that the support people were script readers. Every one. When I asked things outside their scripts, they just looped back through the standard responses. Annoying isn't quite the word.

Just to add, I got a new Dell Vostro Desktop last week, Core I5 at 2.90GHz, 512GB NVMe drive and 8GB RAM. It works good but my experience with a 2015 ASUS upgraded from 8GB to 16GB proved to be good so my 16GB kit upgrade is on its way, be here Tuesday. Interestingly Dell price for the same machine but with 16GB RAM is $206 more than with 8GB. The Crucial kit of 2 modules is only $75. Also, the ASUS was from their business line and the Vostro is pretty much the same. I could have gotten cheaper with Inspiron and much more expensive with other Dell lines.

So far no issues, Also got a Vostro 14" Notebook back in October, has an 802.11ac Wireless adapter which my Router also has.

@ThrashZone is right. I have never populated my board in four slots.
I have in my ROG 2x16 3200 @xmp2 cas latency 16. Cas 15 is way more expensive. This does the job fine ans I have a non K CPU.

Another game that Dell likes to play is what I have seen all along this post with @glasskuter if you add anything, anything that is not sold by Dell, even if it's exactly the same, you're warranty is void.

I just bought a third G15 5511. This one has 11th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H, a 3060 Nvidia chip, 16GB, 2x8GB, DDR4, 3200MHz
Now, there are three issues with this model, first the 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive is not the best and it's a 2230 but not a 2280. I'm changing it for a 980 Pro (Warranty void).

Next and that's the worst, the memory is not the fastest. In fact it's X16 instead of X8. More banks means slower. So, change the memory (Warranty void). (Here is the actual drive and memory.)

Last but not least, the laptop comes with slow 120 Hz with 35ms response time 250 nits, good 165Hz with 13ms response time 300 nits.

So I opted for the 165Hz.

If you change the parts I mentioned above, the warranty will be VOID (keep the parts and put them back in for warranty) but you will have yourself a pretty darn good laptop!
