Just got a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 and wondering if I should upgrade to Windows 11 pro

wonder if it is going to cause issues if I just close it when i am done like i did with my mac's and only restart when needed for updates?

It shouldn't... I leave my laptop on 24/7 and only reboot when I install software or the system is acting up (which isn't often)

Your Surface 3 is a Modern Standby device. Closing the lid should put it into Standby, which can use a little more battery power than the older sleep did and drain the battery faster. If you want to leave it unused for a longer time then you should shut it down rather than enter standby. That's not new for 11, you'd have seen the same thing in 10.

Not using a W11/W10 PC for months on end should not cause any issues, apart from having to catch up on updates when you eventually turn it back on.

@Brian60077, if your Surface 3 uses Modern Standby be careful if you leave it plugged in and only close the lid. A couple of weeks ago I just closed the lid on my HP Envy x360 and it over heated. I don't know if there were any programs running or it was caused by the short power outage, we had that night. The laptop wouldn't start until it cooled down. Even the fan wouldn't run. I thought for sure that it was cooked and wouldn't work.

Windows 11 runs on just about anything. So it should be fine. Be interested to know how you find it. I quite like it but stayed on 10 for my main machine.

So far, I seem to be surprised how much improved windows has become.

It's certainly come a long way since XP :) Although I did love XP with all its quirks. I had a few minor quibbles with 11. The full menu not being instantly visible (but not a big deal) and the hidden options and tiny icons on the right click menu (but there is a way of changing that so everything visible and no tiny icons - article on here).

I got my Microsoft Surface laptop 3 last Saturday, needed a Windows laptop for my job, and found a good deal on it on my local craigslist. It told me that it was able to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro from Windows 10 Pro, and with the helpful advice from members here, I decided to allow it to do the upgrade Sunday afternoon.

Remember, this is the first windows laptop I have had since the abortion Windows Vista was, been mainly a mac user since, and so far I have to say that Windows 11 Pro is actually quite surprisingly pleasant to use, hasn't done any of the stupid nonsense that vista used to do daily, hasn't acted stupid at all, and actually performs very well on my Microsoft Surface laptop 3. So far it has been a pleasure to use. Some things will take getting used to, just like it did when I switched to mac, and that is to be expected, and so far nothing major where it makes me say wtf were they thinking.

On to the Microsoft Surface laptop 3, I am very pleasantly surprised how nicely it is put together, how well it performs having the i5, 8gb or ram and the 256 SSD. It performs about the same as my tricked out macbook pro from 2013. It has a beautiful display, a beautiful design, and has the backlit keyboard which is very important since I have never mastered knowing where the letters are on a keyboard, and since we are STILL being asked to work from home due to this alleged virus, I guess it exists even though I have been in 28 different states, around many people and hardly if ever followed any risk reduction, and never caught even a cold, often times I will lay in the bed or on the couch doing the work projects and the back lit keyboard makes it much easier to see the letters, and doesn't seem to affect battery life too much.

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised and happy I bought this surface laptop 3, and so far extremely pleasantly surprised how well put together windows 11 pro is.....

Now that I have said that, watch it start acting stupid, lol... and really hope not.

But then Windows has been trying to do that back in Win8 and a bit earlier, think "clean desktop". A number of things in Control Panel are now on the right-click of the Windows Start button. A couple of things different is removal of Additional Toolbars on the Taskbar and the Show Desktop doesn't work the same as the Peek of Win10.

actually IMHO it was Windows 10's Settings app that was a bit of a treasure hunt. And once you found a setting they moved it for the next release of 10.

Windows 11's Settings app has a more logical hierarchical structure and it's relatively easy (once you get used to it) to drill down and find the setting you want. You're just feeling lost because you're still trying to look in the nonsensical places W10 hid its settings

After using the Surface Laptop 3 and Windows 11 Pro for a little over a month, actually a month and 2 days, I have to say that maybe, just maybe.... Microsoft got an operating system right. Even on my spare, or shop laptop.... that is unsupported for windows 11 by Microsoft, Windows 11 Pro is much better than Windows 7, and 100,000 times better than Windows Vista ever hoped to be.
