Insider KB5029336 Windows 11 Insider Beta 22621.2191 and 22631.2191 - Aug. 10

UPDATE 8/18:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.2191 and Build 22631.2191 (KB5029336) to the Beta Channel.
  • Build 22631.2191 = New features rolling out.
  • Build 22621.2191 = New features off by default.

KB5027397 Enablement Package for Windows 11 Beta build 22621.xxx (22H2) to build 22631.xxx (23H2)

REMINDER: Insiders who were previously on Build 22624 will automatically get moved to Build 22631 via an enablement package. The enablement package artificially increments the build number for the update with new features getting rolled out and turned on to make it easier to differentiate from devices with the update with features off by default. This approach is being used for the Beta Channel only and is not indicative of any changes or plans for final feature rollouts.

Insiders who landed in the group with new features turned off by default (Build 22621.xxxx) can check for updates and choose to install the update that will have features rolling out (Build 22631.xxxx).

What’s new in Build 22631.2191

HDR Background Support

You can now set JXR files to be your desktop background and if you have an HDR display, they will render in full HDR.

First – make sure your device has an HDR display or is connected to a HDR display that supports HDR. You can check this by going to Settings > System > Display and checking the HDR toggle.

Next, download an HDR .JXR file to your device. Then right-click on your desktop, choose “Personalize” and then “Background”, and under “Personalize your background” – go and select the .JXR file you downloaded to your device.

You can download example .JXR files here to try this experience out on your HDR-capable device/display.

The background should load on your display. If you have multiple displays attached to your device, the background will show as HDR or SDR depending on each display’s capabilities. When using external displays attached to your device, we recommend running the HDR Calibration app for best picture quality. Please note that for this build, there may be some issues with the HDR version of the desktop background not correctly display on some laptops with HDR.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Background and Wallpaper.

Narrator Natural Voices in French, Portuguese, English (India), German and Korea

We are introducing new natural voices in French, Portuguese, English (India), German and Korean that allow Narrator users to comfortably browse the web, read, and write mail, and do more. Natural Narrator voices use modern, on-device text to speech and once downloaded are supported without an internet connection.

To use one of the natural voices, add it to your PC by following these steps:
  1. Open Narrator Settings by pressing the WIN + Ctrl + N hotkey.
  2. Under Narrator’s voice, select the Add button next to Add natural voices.
  3. Select the voice you want to install. You can install all voices, but you must install them separately.
    • The new French voices are Microsoft Denise (Female) and Microsoft Henri (Male)
    • The new Portuguese voices are Microsoft Francisca (Female) and Microsoft Antonio (Male)
    • The new English (India) voices are Microsoft Neerja (Female) and Microsoft Prabhat (Male)
    • The new German voices are Microsoft Katja (Female) and Microsoft Conrad (Male)
    • The new Korean voices are Microsoft SunHi (Female) and Microsoft InJoon (Male)
  4. To start the download of the selected voice, select Install. The new voice will download and be ready for use in a few minutes, depending on your internet download speed.
  5. When the new voice has downloaded, in Narrator settings select your preferred voice from the drop-down menu in Narrator’s voice > Choose a voice.
Note: If your display language is not set to any of the above languages, then in step 3 you will first need to select “Choose a different language” and then select the appropriate language followed by the specific voice.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (Win + F) under Accessibility > Narrator.

Changes and Improvements in Build 22631.2191

[Windows 365]

  • Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels can participate in the public preview of Windows 365 Switch. Windows 365 Switch provides the ability to easily move between a Windows 365 Cloud PC and the local desktop using the same familiar keyboard commands, as well as a mouse-click or a swipe gesture through Task View on the Windows 11 taskbar. Please read this blog post for all the details on how to participate.

Easily switch between a Windows 365 Cloud PC and the local desktop via Task View.
Easily switch between a Windows 365 Cloud PC and the local desktop via Task View.

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • REMINDER: As noted in our Beta Channel flight here, the settings for never combined mode for the taskbar were showing up under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors but do not enable the experience. We have temporarily removed the settings for this to fix the issue. The feature will be coming to a Beta Channel flight soon.

[File Explorer]

  • We’ve added “Share” to the context menu in File Explorer in addition to having the share icon at the top of the context menu.

  • Added more fields to show in the Details pane, including image dimensions for pictures, number of pages for .docx, space used and free information for drives, and many others.

[Windows Spotlight]

  • After doing an OS update, in certain cases such as using the default Windows 11 background or a solid color – Windows Spotlight may be enabled for you. If you decide you don’t want Windows Spotlight enabled, you can turn it off and in future OS updates it should not be enabled for you again unless you choose to re-enable the experience.

Fixes in Build 22631.2191

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed an issue which was causing File Explorer to crash when navigating to Home, as well as some other issues causing crashes.
  • Fixed a memory leak in File Explorer with the latest updates which could cause explorer.exe crashes and other issues over prolonged usage.
  • Fixed an issue where after refreshing Home, actions to pin and unpin favorite files might not work.
  • Fixed an issue where the tooltip would get stuck on the screen when you scrolled Home with touch.
  • Fixed an issue where collapsing and expanding the sections of Home didn’t always work.
  • Fixed an issue where Home and Gallery could get stuck in the wrong colors if they were open when changing between light and dark mode.
  • Fixed an issue where thumbnails in Gallery might not load after changing the view to a smaller icon size (for example, medium to small).
  • Made some small adjustments to the size of elements, including reducing the size of the text.
  • The ALT + D, CTRL + L, and F4 keyboard shortcuts should work now to set focus to the address bar.
  • Fixed an issue where typing drive letters, %localappdata%, and certain other things in the address bar wasn’t causing suggested paths to appear in a dropdown.
  • Fixed an issue where the icons displayed in the tabs in File Explorer could become out of sync with the current folder after navigating.
  • Fixed an issue which was causing File Explorer to show “Working on it” in an empty folder.
  • Fixed an issue where the image in the Details pane might get blurry after resizing the File Explorer window.
  • Fixed an issue where the design of the details pane was displaying from left to right instead of right to left when using Hebrew or Arabic display languages.
  • Fixed an issue where the text box for naming newly created files or folders on the desktop was showing in the wrong position (far away or way too close) relative to the thumbnail.
  • Fixed an issue where ALT + P and Shift + Alt + P keyboard shortcuts weren’t working when focus was set to one of the images in Gallery.
  • Fixed an issue where right clicking items in the navigation pane wouldn’t open a context menu after you changed folders.
  • Fixed an issue which was causing explorer.exe to crash when trying to access an FTP address.
  • Fixed an issue where selecting the dropdown arrows in the address bar was opening a blank menu.

[Dynamic Lighting]

  • Fixed an issue where devices might show as empty squares in Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.

Known issues

[General]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing explorer.exe to crash on the login screen when attempting to enter safe mode.

[File Explorer]

  • In some cases, the context menu background in File Explorer may appear transparent.
  • In some cases, the icons on your desktop may all go blank. If this happens, using the refresh option in the desktop context menu should resolve it.

[Taskbar]

  • We’re working on a fix for an issue causing the safely remove hardware icon to not appear when expected in the system tray.

[Input]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing typing with the Japanese and Chinese IMEs to not work correctly after the latest flights for some Insiders.

[Narrator]

  • You may see some of the strings are NOT localized to the selected language. This will be fixed in a future flight.

About the Beta Channel

The Beta Channel is the place we preview experiences that are closer to what we will ship to our general customers. Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first. However, this does not mean every feature we try out in the Beta Channel will ship. We encourage Insiders to read this blog post that outlines the ways we’ll try things out with Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels.

Much, much more simple than yours
Yours is different because normally, Bluetooth just opens the "Bluetooth & device" section which also includes Printers and other devices that are non-bluetooth of the Windows Settings App, the same one where there is Windows Update. Yours is simpler because your Bluetooth Device is generic and not one of the branded which usually is Intel or Qualcomm/Atheros as can be seen in the Device Manager. So it is yours is simpler, your Bluetooth settings is opening up something that is proprietary and not how it is officially in both Windows 10 and 11 as it even mentions in official Microsoft Support articles:

and this forum's tutorials for that matter:

which might explain why your Bluetooth icon in the system tray is non-standard as your logo is also not the official bluetooth logo as while it has the B and H, it's lacking the blue background which has been the official Bluetooth logo since the beginning, which probably means your bluetooth adapter did not officially license the technology.

This article actually explains it better:

Your settings page reminds me of the Bluetooth USB adapters from the early 2000's which I used in Windows XP 32bit where the BT icon comes from a rundll32.exe process that actually calls up a app provided by the bluetooth driver stack before Windows had bluetooth settings built into the OS. That is the same reason even if everyone else's Blue background BT icon no longer shows up in system tray, you will never have the problem because your BT settings comes from a separate app so even when Explorer crashes, all you need to do is kill and restart the process and you will see the BT icon again while everyone else won't. The only bad thing is if the app somehow no longer works and there is no update, you will never get BT working again.

That's how I got to mines too as it's part of the More Bluetooth Settings from the Settings and basically opens something from the old Control Panel. Your settings is opening up a proprietery dialogue while everyone else including mines is opening up the Windows Settings app and going to the Bluetooth and devices section which covers both bluetooth and non-bluetooth wifi devices.

Mine has the "traditional" settings. I see that your BT icon is the "non-blue" one. Perhaps that is a contributing factor.
I think everyone else in general in Device Manager has a Bluetooth adapter that is from a name brand like Intel, Qualcomm/Atheros while his is a Generic with no name brand and there is never a official BT icon that does not have the blue background as the icon itself.

Not using a laptop, myself, but I'd advise anyone having problems with these builds to go into Group Policy and set it to never allow Windows to update device drivers. It's what I've had set for years, and is likely why the problems I experience are very few and far in-between. Also, the setting sticks in every updated build provided you upgrade instead of fresh install--no need to repeat it every time you install newer builds. I get my drivers from the respective device manufacturers of my hardware--download and install them manually from the 'net. Years ago, before I wised up and set that in Group Policy, I had a lot of problems with builds that were mostly issues with Windows replacing my device drivers automatically. Most critical, of course, are your GPU drivers--which definitely should come from the laptop manufacturer, Win10/11, 64-bit GPU driver files. (32-bit systems might in themselves be problematic--I can't speak to that, as I haven't done 32-bits in many years.) Green/blue screens of death and build upgrades that would stick at a certain percentage and fail to install, were regular occurrences that ceased (save for the rare exception) after I killed Windows automatically updating my device drivers in Group Policy.

Laptop owners should set that in GP, and so should desktop system owners, and acquire their device drivers from the manufacturers of their laptops--desktops should go to the GPU manufacturer's sites, eg, nVidia, AMD, etc. Most laptops are custom devices that require custom device drivers only available from the laptop manufacturer. BTW, the only way to do it properly is inside Group Policy--doing it elsewhere in the OS doesn't work, apparently.

This replaced my Linux Notebook. I've used Windows since V2, tried various Linux distros but Windows continues to win for me.

That advice might be good or bad because on my Dell XPS 15 9570 for example, the latest Intel video driver is in the 27.x.x.x which means it's WDDM 2.7, while Windows 11 would prefer WDDM 3.0/3.1 drivers. So it depends. Also, the 27.x.x.x drivers has a well known issue where dwm.exe had a major resource leak that wasn't fixed until in the newer 30 or 31 series drivers as can be seen here:

I am a moderator for laptopvideo2go.com and in the old days like in the early 2000s, mods were needed to get video drivers to work but in the recent times, the drivers from the GPU manufacturers work fine without any issues. Besides, remember the Intel GPU is part of the CPU and not a actual separate GPU and I am sure Intel knows their CPU and what's in it better than Dell would.

Yes, while the group policy would work, there are sometimes where I want Windows to replace the drivers as a lot of times, I get newer than available drivers for both GPU, WiFi and Bluetooth than what's publicly available. So in my case, the only complaint I have is not for Windows to replace my Intel GPU drivers with a version # older than what's installed which in this case, it puts 27.x.x.x when I am already on drivers that are 31.x.x.x, the real problem is Windows should just check if the version they want to install has a number that is greater than what they want to install before they install it an don't install if the version is the same or equal to what's already on the system. So until I actually have problems, I'll just let Windows replace drivers as there is Windows Update history I can check regularly to see if anything has been replaced.

Perhaps it is!
I think the thing is Intel's Bluetooth drivers don't come with their own app so it relies on what Windows provides while some Bluetooth stacks like Widcomm and Toshiba comes with their own apps so you can think of what you have as an advantage as you didn't have the issue when everyone else did as your BT settings has it's own app and not relying on the one built into Windows but ofcourse should the one you have stop working for any reason and there are no updates to fix it, then you will run into a problem without a solution. Just curious, but does your Windows Settings app actually have a Bluetooth and devices section and if it does, what does it actually look like when you open it?

It's obvious it hasn't happened yet since it's still working. :-)

Interesting so it seems like even Windows Settings is basically sending that part to the app. Did you actually have to install the bluetooth drivers and software or did Windows just automatically worked? Trying to phrase this correctly, is the Bluetooth acually part of the motherboard, a expansion card, a dongle you plug in by USB?

Nope! No driver installation at all, it just worked.
It have two: Expansion Card and I had to install drivers for the USB one (it is 5.1 + Wireless Network).

Great New system. Exceeds my expectations by quite a bit, btw.
As @Ed Tittel and others are aware, there was a long-standing bug introduced in build .1972 that caused DISM to fail with error 6824 on cleaning up the component store. An offline cleanup was the only fix I could find.

Bree said:
For some of us build .1972 introduced a bug when attempting to clean up the component store.
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup failed with:
Error: 6824
The operation cannot be performed because another transaction is depending on the fact that this property will not change.
This bug was not addressed by build .2050, or in .2048, as I demonstrated in post #22 here:

There is a fix, you have to use DISM to perform an off line clean up, links to the details of how to do that are in that post above. As I said in that post, I deliberately left one of my VMs unfixed to see if MS would ever address this issue. Apparently they still haven't fixed this (or even acknowledged it, as far as I'm aware).
KB5028251 Windows 11 Insider Beta 22621.2115 and 22631.2115 - July 26 - post #7

I'm pleased to report that Microsoft have finally fixed this. Whether by accident or design we'll never know, Microsoft seem to have fixed it quietly without ever saying anything about it.

I confirmed that the VM I deliberately left unfixed still had the error before updating.....

Screenshot 2023-08-14 153627.png

...then updated it.

Screenshot 2023-08-14 155027.png

After updating to 22631.2191 the error 6824 no longer occurs, DISM now runs to completion successfully.

Not always as you do know that for the Intel WiFi/Bluetooth, the manufacturers site being Intel in this case is atleast 1 month behind. Even for the GPU drivers, if you looked at the Intel GPU thread, you will see that there are drivers that are newer that come in via the Windows Update only tha are newer and still won't show up atleast a month later from the GPU manufacturers site which is Intel in this case and literally never on the actual notebook manufacturers site because their latest drivers are a few years old. So like I said, it depends on the scenario as you really want up to date drivers that meets Windows 11 specifications which is WDDM 3.0 or 3.1 which in the case with Intel GPU drivers are v30.x.x.x and v31.x.x.x drivers and not WDDM v2.7 drivers which are really meant for Windows 10 and not 11 which is why I said, it depends as things can always have good sides and bad sides. Similar to one shouldn't be in Beta Insiders either since it also forces you to use that version and it's not like you can uninstall it like you can with drivers should something go wrong, without talking about using backups but you will still lose any changes since the last backup, you will be stuck with it until the next version comes out. So it depends on the user really since if no one tests out the drivers before it's on the manufacturers website or otherwise and reports issues on forums, it will be released with the same issues and a bigger population will have the issues as the manufacturer can have the chance to fix it first. It's similar to the Calculator app in Windows 11 that was released a few days ago, try entering a . or , using the keyboard which does not work, if some people had those apps and tested it, the problem would likely effect less people so as with anything, there are always benefits and risks as like the saying goes, there is no guarantee or certainty in anything except death and taxes. But anyways, if the person(s) keeps complaining about bad drivers because of Windows replacing them automatically, then they should do what you mentioned as it would technically be their own fault if they didn't but if they don't mind like I do since there is always a risk in everything as while it may downgrade most of the time, there is also the benefit of seeing newer drivers ahead of the general public, then it should be up to them to do it as there was only one instance of one bad Intel GPU driver version from Windows Update that caused black screens randomly that was actually newer than released versions but also replaced newer versions later that caused problems until that was no longer than the default version Windows Update installs automatically and then at that point, one would have to uninstall until it says Microsoft Basic Driver, install the newest released version so Windows Update will update it and then install the version one wants again as Windows will only install each version it wants to once as as long as the system has installed that version, it will never replace it again.

As @Ed Tittel and others are aware, there was a long-standing bug introduced in build .1972 that caused DISM to fail with error 6824 on cleaning up the component store. An offline cleanup was the only fix I could find.

I confirmed that the VM I deliberately left unfixed still had the error before updating.....

...then updated it.

After updating to 22631.2191 the error 6824 no longer occurs, DISM now runs to completion successfully.
