KB5043145 is giving me major problems in W11 V23H2

Ok in the meantime while I was doing other things KB5044285 installed itself and build is now up to date 22631.4317

But my problems still exist so I think in 24hours time I will do the ""Reset this PC"" My fear is just that with re-installing all the windows updates the end result might just be the same as now.
Everyone in all the different time zones....thanx for all the help so far!

It shouldn’t be a small file. If you choose the build you will compile the whole iso ~4-5GB

Well I clicked on Download created package...and it was a 8kb .zip file. But anyway like I said 4317 has installed itself in the meantime...with no better results for me.

Scroll down and download the .zip
Just extract it to a folder and run the .exe in that folder

Here’s a tutorial for using WuMgr

Hi there, I've had the exact same problem as you twice now following windows updates (and did almost everything you've said word for word!).

Have you previously edited the windows registry to remove arrows from icon shortcuts?

If so, this may be the cause of your problem.

Hi there Tours. I might have done that arrow removal thing yes, but I think many moons ago, or maybe on my old W7 laptop. I am still very reluctant to do that Restart this PC thing, so I am still trying to rectify and find a way to download a Task Manager.exe because I think with that I might just solve my Explorer/shortcuts/icons problem.
And I have broken my promise never to smoke again...:what:

As said previously, your situation is almost identical to mine. I too tried to find a 3rd party Task Manager, but once I did it still didn't resolve my problem. The first time this happened a couple of weeks ago I ended up doing an in place upgrade, which kept all of my files and apps and just reinstalled windows. This solved the problem for me until last night when windows updated and I was back in the same situation PLUS this time windows explorer wouldn't open either (nor could I open any desktop folders). I removed the "no shortcut arrow" tweak from the registry and that got my icons back. I then uninstalled the recent updates and reinstalled them and everything is now fully working (as far as I can tell). I'm not an expert, just a long time home/office user of Windows so I can't give you professional advice but I do feel your frustration! I don't ever recall as many problems with windows updates as I have with the current version.

Good luck!

Ok so please tell me what is an " in place upgrade which kept all of my files and apps and just reinstalled windows" or which one did you choose in System> Recovery.

If I look at an old photo of my desktop it now looks like I did remove the arrows about a year ago. Can you please tell me how did you remove the "no shortcut arrow" from the registry? I have to try anything now, my frustration is sky high...
Thanx

an in-place upgrade would be to download the 23h2 iso. the link i provided to uupdump will download that iso for you.
  1. click the link
  2. click the blue "Next" button
  3. check the box for the version of windows you have (either Home or Pro - leave the other 3 blank)
  4. check "Download and convert to ISO"
  5. click blue button "create download package"
  6. save the .zip file
  7. browse to where you saved the .zip
  8. extract the .zip
  9. right click "uup_download_windows.cmd" > run as administrator
  10. let the command window do its thing. when it needs any input, it will prompt you
  11. once you have finished and it has created your iso file, let me know and we will proceed with the in-place upgrade

To remove the "no shortcut arrow" from the registry I deleted the Shell Icons folder that I had previously created, located here.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

BUT this may have then caused the problem with windows explorer not working after, so be aware of that!

If you do an in place upgrade I think it resets the registry anyway, so you will lose any tweaks/settings changes you might have done (including the no shortcut arrow). If that's true, in theory you don't need to do the above if you are going to perform an in place upgrade.

NOTE: in the video at 2:20 "keep personal files and apps"

Once again I would like to say that I am not a professional so please use any advice I give with caution. Whilst your files and apps SHOULDN'T be affected it is of course best practice to back up everything before. Good luck!

Thanx dacrone I have downloaded the zip file. Before I did anything else we had a look at a youtube video about this shortcut arrow changes in the Registry the Tours mentioned and to my surprise found that the string "%windir%\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,-50" which was suppose to be in "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" has disappeared!

I added the string back in the registry and restarted...and Lo and Behold.. ALL was back to normal as it was before.......My Shortcut icons back, Task Manager was back and my folders and Thumbnails was back as well as I can now see the Properties of any file!

So it remains a mystery to me how a Windows update can corrupt the registry like that, and also that just that one string that has removed the arrow from the shortcuts can make such a difference to other programs.

Thank you again guys for all the help received! I have learnt quite a lot....have a good weekend all!

Great to hear! It's a relief when you get everything back to normal. I know the feeling!

And you can give up the smokes again now! (Well, at least until the next windows update!).

Finally on Oct 16, 2024, the MS Store Downloads button is consistent and present on all machines with public Build 22631.4317.
and MS Store Version 22409.1401.5.0. Not sure why they waited so long to get the same behavior on all machines. 😂🤷‍♂️
