Highlights​

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5043178 (released September 26, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Remote Desktop Gateway Service] Fixed: The service stops responding. This occurs when a service uses remote procedure calls (RPC) over HTTP. Because of this, the clients that are using the service disconnect.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB 5046306)- 26100.2032​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Enterprise usersAfter a fresh install or an In-place upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2, you might face issues with connecting via DirectAccess. You might observe that the DirectAccess connection is not completing and remains in a ‘connecting’ state. Additionally, you can determine if you are affected by this issue by following the below steps:
  • Open Windows PowerShell in administrator prompt. This can be accomplished by opening the Start menu and typing ‘powershell’ and selecting from the results on the right side of the start menu.
  • Type the text ‘netsh interface httpstunnel show interface’ and press enter
  • If your device is experiencing this issue, you’ll observe that the output includes the following text:
    • Last Error Code : 0x57
    • Interface Status : failed to connect to the IPHTTPS server. Waiting to reconnect
You are more likely to face this issue if your device is remotely connecting to a corporate intranet using DirectAccess. Home users of Windows using Home or Pro editions are unlikely to face this issue as DirectAccess is more commonly used in enterprise environments.

Note: Enterprise customers that require DirectAccess are recommended to evaluate Always On VPN (AOVPN) until a fix becomes available.		This issue is addressed in KB5044384.
All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl
  3. Repeat the above steps for C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs.
Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044284 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5044284-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

I see this being common in many corporations, simply (new) management draws from previous decades of near excellence without having a clue on how to contribute towards a better "future", quality control is thing of the past and "opinions" manifested in "cool little projects" that have turned corporate paramount.

I don’t believe you’re describing Microsoft.

Microsoft doesn’t spare a penny hiring the best of the best.
Someone I grew up with from birth is a leading Project Manager for Outlook and Azure.
He gets paid 6 times more than the equivalent wage at any other company, I believe he said. Plus he get’s flown all over Asia Pacific which is his domain. He is also worth every penny.

And no, he wont discuss either with me. I wish he would.
And yes, I asked him to throw his weight around to get PST files back in Outlook 365 lol

Still have unsolvable problem with SFC. In order to try to fix it I attempted In place upgrade with ISO recommended (and only option) by MCT.

It failed at last restart with no other code than Boot Failure blue screen.
File that was downloaded is only Windows.iso . How to know weather it's exactly what I needed? Only other option is

I downloaded the MediaCreationTool and the ISO image is updated (as a guy/gentleman in this forum also said) to version 2033. After formatting everything in my Test SSD, I now have this error: EVENT ID 1796 TPM-WMI.

1) I tried to restore Secure Boot; disable it, reboot into Windows and reboot the computer twice with Secure Boot disabled and then re-enable it. Nothing.

2) I deleted the keys, put it in custom and rebooted twice. Nothing. Always error.

3) Then I went back to Standard, always the error present. Is it a bug, or is there something I have to do in the BIOS? CMOS?

Honestly, I'm getting the urge to reinstall Windows 11 23H2 that I downloaded yesterday from uupdump.net and wait until November to format (at least when it starts to be a little more "normal").

After updating, SFC managed to work, after restart, it fails again. On top of it, DISM cleanup is broken too. o_O

I Just run in place upgrade again and after removing other languages it worked. After that it also did this update
2024-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5044284)
but SFC problem persists.

Ah that was a great year musically. On April 13th Handel's oratorio "Messiah"was performed for the 1st time at New Music Hall in Dublin. I'm not quite old enough to remember the original Music Hall.

Are you sure it still exists? After I upgraded my systems to this level, sfc /scannow said it had fixed problems, but when running it a second time immediately afterwards it ran clear. I took that as meaning it had really fixed the problem now.

Run the following in an elevated command:
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Secureboot /v AvailableUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 0x200 /f
Reboot twice. This updates the Secure Version Number. This fixed the same error for me.

After your command, i've TPM-WMI error 1798: The Secure Boot Dbx update failed to revoke Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011 as boot manager is not signed with the Windows UEFI CA 2023 certificate
