Solved KB5053656 Windows 11 Cumulative Update broke start menu search

Hello everyone, I updated yesterday to KB5053656 Cumulative Update and when I click on the start menu, click in the search box, I used to get a list of recently used searches. Only 5 or 6 items but it was handy sometimes when wanting to go directly to the item. But my list is now empty and I get a line like it is searching. But it never completes. Has anybody else noticed this or is it just me? It's not serious and a search for e.g. command prompt, run, mouse settings etc it does find it. But it doesn't add it to a list like it used to. Any ideas how to fix it?

I am not having a problem in search. You can try to reset windows search to see if it will make a difference.

If using a 3rd party app that alters the GUI, uninstall it to see if there is a difference.

My search settings may be different that yours but this is what I see which is completely different from yours. I use no 3rd party app. I do have Bing search disabled in Windows search. See screenshot.

Have you tried the DISM and SFC diagnosis?

Resetting Windows Search didn't work. I ran all the DISM commands and SFC and it didn't fix it.

I've rolled back to a previous copy of Windows prior to installing the last Cumulative update. And it is working OK.

I just saw another user on the forum with the same problem. Looks like MS messed up again.

I've turned off get the latest updates.

I'm having no issue with the Start button and the Search on it nor with the Search next to the button on the Taskbar.

OK, with a lot of work with Macrium and previous images, I ruled out Bree's reclaimable file fix. I've ruled out the Windows KB5053656 Cumulative Update which I wrongly assumed caused it.

It was CCleaner doing something (It did have an update a few days ago). I've uninstalled CCleaner and just used the built in Windows Storage Sense and Temp files and it has no affect on start menu search.

My system is working perfectly again. I'll mark this thread as solved.

I got rid of CCleaner some time back when it caused me some issues.
