Laptop sounds like it’s about to blow up

I know - it’s just one of those weeks I think. It was literally a few drops splashed on the keyboard - thought I’d get away with it. I might still but if it’s doing the same tomorrow then I’ll take the back off. Im missing Windows 11 now 😂.

Was it something like water or was it a sugary drink? If it was sugary, you may have to do a little cleaning.

It was just very weak tea! I'm now on my little Eee PC on windows 10 which is working surprisingly well - a bit slow but not too bad. Signed into firefox so have all passwords and bookmarks but no files right now - although I can access them if needed as they're all on idrive.

Replacement (used) laptop isn't here until tomorrow. When that's set up and running I'll see what I can salvage from the other one. In the old days swapping the keyboard for a new one sometimes sorted it but that's not so easy to do these days. The keyboard is the whole front chassis. Although I do have a spare one. I suspect it may be a bit more than just the keyboard though. It does switch on - I can't log in though as if I try and type my passcode it types a string of random letters for each key stroke.

if your touchpad or an external mouse works, you can use ease of access on the login screen to open the onscreen keyboard

Thank you - that hadn't occurred to me :-) I did think about using onscreen keyboard if logged in but didn't realise I could do that on the login screen. To be honest I think I'm going to leave it to fully dry out another day or so before turning it on again. If it's still the same then, then I'll have a closer look at things and take it apart.

I'm actually loving using my 10" netbook again. As it won't run windows 11 and won't safely run Windows 10 after October, I've decided to get a similar replacement that will run Windows 11. As my backup laptop in future. Seen them before and tried to buy one before but it had to go back as was locked with an education password. It's an ex education HP Probook X360 11.6". 8th generatioIn core i5 and 8gb of soldered ram. Drop proof and spill proof! Most of them are only 4gb ram and pentium. It's a slow i5 but faster than pentium.

So I have two "new to me" laptops coming. Total cost £380. One 8th generation (the rugged one), one 10th generation HP Pavilion. I did something like this over a year ago and it didn't work out so fingers crossed neither are faulty this time.

I've also bought one of these - for future use on usbc ports. Although this one only went because the laptop was dropped rather than a cable being yanked.

Dont slip with those vice grips, cause some damage. I’d much sooner use the bits built for the job. But if it’s worth a shot, take it.
My wife uses vice grips on me.

As an update, it seems to be working fine again after a couple of days being left to dry - keyboard back to normal.

That just leaves me with

1) a non working usbc port (due to fall damage) - but replacement/used identical model has arrived.
2) a dead HP Spectre X360 which won't charge - I don't think repairing it is an option based on various bits of research and opinions.
3) a laptop with a stripped screw on the ssd drive.

I'm going to sell 2) and 3) for spares. I only paid £100 for 3) in the first place.
